There is a ludic intensity to this music that erupts through the freeform transmissions of its jaunty obversion of symbols – seemingly every creative instinct being guided away from itself by the fervent spirits of its earthlike grounds. In an essay on the subject of the syncretic nature shared between musical expression and body-motion in reference to Aristides Quintilianus’ De Musica, Albrecht Riethmüller writes: “‘Body’ can refer to at least three things: first, to every real (that is, without transferred meaning) body that participates in making sound; second, to the planets or stars, insofar as they not only are a paradigm for the motion of all bodies but also embody the harmony of the spheres; and third, to the human body, insofar as it participates in musical processes or the production of sonic phenomena (p. 153).” This kinesthesis between raw and organic matter, haptic sensation, and environmental shifts is based on a concept of rhythm that can be defined as “…a system of chronoi (time elements or ‘times’) that are arranged in some order (p. 155).” Taking this ancient Greek theoretical approach to music as a prefatory inquiry thus offers key insights into the anima of this record. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e If there is one core ambition behind this music that is synoptic of its contents therein, it is an ascetic meditation on texture. For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble recording session they’d done in-person since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice moments from these sessions made it onto Villarreal’s critically-acclaimed 2022 album Panamá 77, but most of the music remained unreleased.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLados B is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Illuha’s electro-acoustic environments that teem with beautifully recorded, precise, delicate details get taken to a new place with the presence of Yamamoto’s deep sense of groove and unique approach to the drum kit.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTobira means “door” or “opening” in Japanese and after years of working as a duo, Fuller and Date were looking for a way into new sonic territories which lead them to explore rhythmic structures, an unchartered territory for the band that also felt, excitingly, like a faux pas in “ambient” music.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTobira consists of material recorded over 2 inspired sessions and a few successive overdubs. Yamamoto added a new sonic palette and was instrumental in the expanse of Illuha’s musical structure both during live improvisation and in the studio. His drumming style is characterized by a very light touch with microphones close to the drums to capture the quiet textured hits while amplifying them into a present\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e voice.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eImmediately at the album’s onset we hear Yamamoot’s drum kit, signalling, to those familiar with Illuha’s music, that something different is happening here. The percussive voices continue to mingle amongst Fuller and Date’s pool of rhodes, piano, distant synths and metallic murmurations. By the fourth track, “Nijiriguchi” the trio has entered a hazy darkness of pulsing drums, distorted guitar and bass playing that carries the the album into a noir-infused headspace before settling back into angled atmospherics. Yamamoto added a new sonic palette and was instrumental in the expanse of Illuha’s musical structure both during live improvisation and in the studio. His drumming style is characterized by a very light touch with microphones close to the drums to capture the quiet textured hits while amplifying them into a present\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e voice.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eImmediately at the album’s onset we hear Yamamoot’s drum kit, signalling, to those familiar with Illuha’s music, that something different is happening here. The percussive voices continue to mingle amongst Fuller and Date’s pool of rhodes, piano, distant synths and metallic murmurations. By the fourth track, “Nijiriguchi” the trio has entered a hazy darkness of pulsing drums, distorted guitar and bass playing that carries the the album into a noir-infused headspace before settling back into angled atmospherics.
