Wabi Sabi Tapes:

"As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Through the Looking Glass, Italian artist MonoLogue offers a musical re-reading of Lewis Carroll's work. In this sequel to Alice in Wonderland, the author takes the main protagonist back to a fantasy world where opposites attract themselves and nonsense defies logic.

MonoLogue's adaptation is more of an evocation than a sound narration. ALICE is constructed like an open labyrinth and the whole structure moves like a chess board. The musician has fun shifting the reference points by instilling a deceptive familiarity. Each element, by integrating the compositional patchwork, creates a mischievous doppelgänger with which it can dialogue throughout the album.

By taking the listener into a downward spiral, Apertura weaves a dizzying backdrop that sows the seeds of the melodies to come. Thus, the synthesizer notes that bead like raindrops at the bottom of a well in this first track will take shape until they find a continuous pulse. Then, through a subtle play of effects, MonoLogue shifts the listener's attention by veiling the harmony in favour of an assemblage of living musical forms.

And if we sometimes get lost, it is to better appreciate the disquieting strangeness of an unexplored environment, that of a listening experience where we are able to abandon ourselves. In Le Temps des Paysages, Jacques Rancière says: "It is not the landscape that seems larger than it is, it is the mind itself that expands. So this MonoLogue album reinvents a cartography of the Carollian imagination and sends back to the listener an extended reflection of his own perceptions."
