Zithers, bass harps, wooden drums, buzz boxes, boing boxes and dog bone xylophones. He uses these “perverted,” hybrid instruments — along with more standard instruments like piano, synths and drums — to make ecstatic compositions twirling amid zydeco, Sufi mystical music, Moondog and the prepared piano pieces of John Cage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDavid is also a bit of a hermit — or rather, “a lot of a hermit.” He’s lived most every day of his life in Rosedale, a decaying town on the Mississippi River that David referred to as “Dildodale” in our earliest email exchanges. He’s there now, among his books of philosophy and music theory of the Far East, next to his wood stove and a roof collapsing under the limb of a magnolia tree. Of course, David has very much been around: A trip to Memphis on the day Elvis died; A visit to DC when he was invited to play at Kennedy Center; to New Orleans Jazz Festival where he both performed and showed his woodcraft. But a minor stroke and profound loss have made the last 20 years a more solitary and stationary existence, often without phone service or Internet.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut this music — David’s astonishing, powerful music — is ALL MOVEMENT. All activity. All rising and falling. All shimmering and ceaseless. Leapfrogging across The Centuries. Lillypadding betwixt Heaven and Earth. Piercing the veil and back again at the speed of a hiccup. Sure, David is a hermit but more so, he’s a Hermeticist — a conjurer and trickster, a necromancer and lovable reprobate.
