Using only vocals and some effects, she makes a handful of students from a tiny Danish town sound both alien and medieval; the way the piece unfolds is graceful, its tone and feeling is sacred yet warm, like a Christmas carol from an alternate, minimalist universe. “I still find these voices so close and vulnerable, it’s very touching,” shares Marta Forsberg, reflecting on this piece 4 years after it was written. Featuring the voices of a few young students from Jyderup imitating the sounds of a violin, ‘Light Colours In Jyderup’ marked the beginning of Marta Forsberg’s explorations of the voice as an instrument. Here, death signifies a new beginning, a clean slate, a starting point of discussion. The music which follows, however, is unified by a sense of wistful playfulness and incredible fluidity. It’s obviously electronic music, made by a human using various machines, but it’s seemingly humanless, self-generating, just emanating organically. Melodies meander unpredictably, loops intertwine like malfunctioning music boxes. Some pieces end abruptly, reminding you of that feeling when a cloud suddenly covers the sun on a summer day; others feel like they could go on forever and you wouldn’t ever notice.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eStas Sharifullin’s collaborative spirit shines through in half of the tracks, with Rupert Clervaux, Nikolay Kozlov, Perila, Zurkas Tepla and Julia Sharifullina making appearances as either co-producers or vocalists, their contributions adding unique, but subtle flavours to the pieces which slot into the fullness of the album seamlessly.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePerila adds her usual dose of spectrality to the almost-uplifting single “Climb Higher”, while Nikolay Kozlov provides his trademark barely-there dub sensibility to “Fake Feathers”. “Oneiropolois” is a jarring, cleansing short piece featuring Russian electronic punk artist Zurkas Tepla. “Carousel” is a bubbly, yet melancholy, “Goodbye Black Sky” – which alludes to Krasnoyarsk and the local ecological disaster – is brooding and beautiful. Throughout the record, HMOT walks a thin line: this music is about something ending, but perhaps even more it’s about something beautiful rising from the ashes. Their self-titled debut record is the culmination of a year of remote collaboration, stem-swapping, blind trust and an almost telepathic creative process.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“I really had no idea what form it would take. It seemed equally likely to manifest itself through song-form or collage,” shares Mari Maurice about her (lack of) expectations at the beginning of the creative process. Nick Zanca continues: “…she sent over a few sketches with a few overdubbed layers of edited improvisations for me to work with, which quickly evolved into a reciprocal back-and-forth.” By the summer of 2020, the duo racked up quite a lot of material, a combination of heavily processed and treated acoustic performances, synth work, field recordings and found sounds. Over the next few months, this material was refined, spliced and moulded into the duo's debut album. In September 2020, several chemical leaks into the river caused the poisoning and subsequent death of 40 tons of wildlife in the waterway – an unprecedented catastrophe. Growing up in Přerov, Bečva was an ever-present part of Tomáš Niesner’s youth and this environmental disaster affected him deeply. In an effort to understand the river better and inspired by Werner Herzog’s ‘Of Walking in Ice’, Niesner set out on a journey from the spring of Bečva to its confluence with river Morava, a journey of over 100km. In September 2020, several chemical leaks into the river caused the poisoning and subsequent death of 40 tons of wildlife in the waterway – an unprecedented catastrophe. Growing up in Přerov, Bečva was an ever-present part of Tomáš Niesner’s youth and this environmental disaster affected him deeply. In an effort to understand the river better and inspired by Werner Herzog’s ‘Of Walking in Ice’, Niesner set out on a journey from the spring of Bečva to its confluence with river Morava, a journey of over 100km. It was a romantic quest in wholly unromantic circumstances, an attempt to expiate the irreversible.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBečvou, the album, is a travelogue of sorts, an aural chronicle of this journey. Arranged and composed around field recordings from the river banks, it also features Tomáš Niesner on guitar, zither and modular synthesizer, unlike many of his previous releases where he’d zero in on one instrument. Combining elements of fingerstyle guitar, musique concrete and drone, it’s an elemental tapestry of enveloping textures, shimmering guitar motifs and soaring synth sounds. Slowly, the album moves through time, at first reinterpreting recordings from the 60s and 70s, eventually showcasing some of Kajsa's latest compositions for voice and field recordings. Some pieces utilise very specific recordings - “Trio for cello, piano and violin” is based on an audio snippet of Kajsa's “mother, uncle and grandfather making an appearance as a trio in Swedish radio sometime during the 70's” - while others - “Anna”, inspired by memories of the Lindgrens' family boat called Anna and the sensation of being rocked to sleep by the Baltic sea waves - are more related to memories, places or objects.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut 'Everyone is here' isn't a mere timeline of sounds or melancholic dive into previous decades. The album is a meditation on themes of inheritance, family and closeness. The composer\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edescribes the process of collecting old sonic material as “comforting”, especially in relation to her relationship with her grandparents, parents and family friends. “[The process] has given me an intimate understanding of them as human beings. We’ve all been kids, becoming adults. Trying to figure out who we are, what we want, what makes us happy and sad in life. Lindgren never treats this as the endpoint though, which is where it differs from something like The Caretaker’s slow waltz into oblivion. Euphoric peaks rise out of nowhere on songs like the breathtaking “Endings” or “Trio for cello, piano and violin.” The latter comes from a radio performance by Lindgren’s mother, uncle, and grandfather and in her crumbling edits, she updates it, creating a quartet that spans time and space.
