" Beyond the Reach of Light is the 4th release from Oakland-based drone musician Field of Fear. The band’s most personal record, Beyond the Reach of Light chronicles the ebbs and flows of depression with harrowing precision. The album is an emotionally raw and sonically varied experience - in a moment changing from aggressive industrial charges in “Darkness” to subdued ambient drone throbs in “Cold.” Album closer “Lost” emparts a sense of someone emotionally spent and yet nowhere near the end of the journey.

Written under the guidance of New York–based experimentalist David First, Beyond the Reach of Light combines drone underpinnings with industrial guitar riffs, repetitive rhythms, power electronics-inspired synthetic feedback and electronic noise to deliver shortform pieces - out of step with the genre’s tendency toward lengthy track times."

And over the course of 2020 and 2021, as part of the Fuubutsushi quartet, he released an acclaimed suite of four seasonal ambient jazz records. There is a spectrum of styles, influences, and effects in the Lake Mary catalogue, but all of it can be characterized by patience and a kind of measured beauty. Often longform, the music of Lake Mary moves within the rather open bounds of what might be called organic ambient or extended studies of American Primitive music.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAnd so it is the case with the utterly graceful Slow Grass. Comprised of one long piece of music totaling 40 minutes, separated into a few movements and split over two sides, this latest offering under the Lake Mary banner prominently features Prymek’s often fingerpicked acoustic guitar. His playing is spare but not without energy, and it moves through billows of violin, saxophone, nearly-transparent synthesizers, field recordings and the sirenic singing of Patrick Shiroishi, who is best known as one of the busiest and most versatile saxophone players in the contemporary American\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e avant garde. (Indeed he also contributes saxophone here.) Somehow both modest and masterful, Shiroishi’s evocative singing calls out from and interweaves with a medium distance, not unlike Richard Youngs on his gentle epic, Sapphie or Sarah Davachi on “Play the Ghost.” Prymek meanwhile occasionally switches to playing with a slide or hammering his guitar like a dulcimer, experimenting, gently and masterfully, not only with the timbre of the guitar, but its narrative effect. But Slow Grass is not merely a reflection of records that have come before it. Everything that happens on Slow Grass feels informed by relationships and vivid presence –– presence of mind, presence of memories, sonic presence. The fact that Prymek plays so often and so generously with so many different players is itself a framework for hearing the music. This music is nothing if not generous, open, and warm. It is music that proceeds from and returns to tenderness. In fact, it is an elegy. Prymek wrote Slow Grass while his beloved dog Favorite’s health was declining throughout 2019 and 2020, and the work is named for the moments toward the very end of Favorite’s life when she became immobile, and Prymek and she would simply lay and watch the grass grow. “Life is full of pain,” says the late John Berger. “Tenderness is in part a response to that. But it is also something else. In the face of what is so often surrounding us, tenderness is an almost defiant act of freedom.” Slow Grass is like this. It is tender to the extent that it feels defiant, like shelter is defiant. Prymek says that his playing on the second movement is “an older style of playing,” similar to how he played guitar at that time, 14 years ago, when he first got Favorite. “It's important,” he says, “to remember your origin stories.” This is perhaps the key to Slow Grass. Though we cannot undo the pain of loss, we can defy it by sheltering what and how we have loved. Slow Grass may be born of heartache, but it is not mourning music. The old adage about never judging a book by its cover may often hold true but somehow Xuan Ye's beautiful design speaks volumes about both the sonics and structure of this bewildering document by the Toronto-based composer and sound artist. Though the imagery is blatantly computer-generated, it's rife with references to vegetation, bones, water, and buildings. Similarly, one of the most beguiling aspects of Doell's music here is the friction that builds up between its organic surface and the elusive, unruly quality that permeates just about everything else. Piano is audibly the album's lone instrument, but even with that anchor of familiarity, one still finds themselves confronted with something disorienting, but utterly captivating—tangled layers, meandering forms, subtle idiosyncratic manipulations. Doell's performance brims with improvisatory warmth and bears the unmistakable physicality of a human interacting with an instrument however there's another far less comprehensible force at play—a mystifying undertow that pulls the ear toward murky sonic depths.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe process that birthed this album—his vinyl\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e debut—unquestionably plays a key role in establishing the feverish liminal space it inhabits. While in a winter residency at the Banff Centre, Doell began each day limbering up with some freeform playing at the piano that had been provided to him. The instrument offered the perfect tool for such open-ended forays —as a guitarist primarily, it liberated him from his internalized technical vocabulary, and yet as a seasoned composer he also had enough keyboard facility to get lost in his own spontaneous playing. From the outset, these daily sessions were recorded, just in case they yielded raw compositional material. Yet, as he captured more of these improvisations the motivation behind the exercise shifted from warm-up to explicitly accumulating piano recordings. This culminated in him digging out a dilapidated piano that had been buried in a snow bank expressly to record it.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt wasn't until he returned home that he discovered just what to do with all the raw footage he had collected. Doell had been developing an algorithmic compositional tool for himself that would generate music based on a user-defined catalogue of sounds and various parameters. Each of the three pieces found on Becoming In Shadows ~ Of Being Touched was spawned through exploring this very software. Yet in spite of them being produced through this process, Doell seems to have little interest in making this about the technology. The old adage about never judging a book by its cover may often hold true but somehow Xuan Ye's beautiful design speaks volumes about both the sonics and structure of this bewildering document by the Toronto-based composer and sound artist. Though the imagery is blatantly computer-generated, it's rife with references to vegetation, bones, water, and buildings. Similarly, one of the most beguiling aspects of Doell's music here is the friction that builds up between its organic surface and the elusive, unruly quality that permeates just about everything else. Piano is audibly the album's lone instrument, but even with that anchor of familiarity, one still finds themselves confronted with something disorienting, but utterly captivating—tangled layers, meandering forms, subtle idiosyncratic manipulations. While in a winter residency at the Banff Centre, Doell began each day limbering up with some freeform playing at the piano that had been provided to him. The instrument offered the perfect tool for such open-ended forays —as a guitarist primarily, it liberated him from his internalized technical vocabulary, and yet as a seasoned composer he also had enough keyboard facility to get lost in his own spontaneous playing. From the outset, these daily sessions were recorded, just in case they yielded raw compositional material. Yet, as he captured more of these improvisations the motivation behind the exercise shifted from warm-up to explicitly accumulating piano recordings. This doesn't mean there aren't still tough times, but times of warmth and comfort are much more present these days. I will never be able to change my past, the things that hurt me, but I can live in a peaceful and beautiful life of my own creation. The most important thing I've had to teach myself is that there is nothing wrong with my body or my brain. My body is fat, and I struggle with my mental health daily, and neither of those things make me any less of a human being. I know that my Black, Fat, Queer and Non binary body is valid in every way. Learning to love my whole self unconditionally will be a lifelong journey, but I am just so happy to be where I am today.
