A 2xLP of recordings was released in 2010 by North Carolina dance label FrequeNC, but most BCNC material remains in varied, diabolical states of unfinish. ULYSSA collects an abundance of these unpolished gems on ‘Classic Assholes: 2007-2022.’ Consider it a glimpse through the veil. Melodic motifs and lyrical phrases surface over and over across these 20 songs. During a 2008 performance, some toad in the crowd called BCNC “Sunburned Hand of Dave Matthews Band!” One BCNC member yelled back “Go to hell!” while another, flattered, sang “Oh, THANK YOU, friend!” They keep\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e the flat and the flubbed, the bungled and the botched. They keep the blood-gargling falsetto. They keep the off-key cartoon piano. They keep the amphetamine Xmas jams. They flaunt the imperfection and somehow capture a shit-eating grin in audio form. While the group has been mostly dormant over the last several years, one gets the sense that — much like their compositions — BCNC is unfortunately never really quite finished. Through the 80s and early 90s, they made speedy, wild coldwave as Der Plan, releasing music on their own label Ata Tak (which also released Oval’s wonderful debut ‘Wohnton’!). In the mid-90s, influenced by a lifelong love for the exotica and tiki bar jazz of Martin Deny and Les Baxter, the two formed A Certain Frank. Hence, the sounds of A Certain Frank are far warmer, sensual and sultry than that of Der Plan. “Without You,” from their 2001 album ‘Nothing,’ approaches something like Sade across its pulsating, truly gorgeous six minutes. And the New Age composition “Naïve,” from A Certain Frank’s 1996 debut ‘No End No…’ (and appearing on DSPs for the first time courtesy of your friends here at ULYSSA), drifts back-and-forth between enchanting flute lines and brooding, synth stabs. And then, there’s “Nothing,” a shadowy triphop earworm that stands confidently alongside the work of Skalpel or Portishead. Yes, A Certain Frank is that good and, sadly, that overlooked. It would take one person 83 sleepless days of endless listening to aurally ingest just one 24-hour cycle of new Spotify uploads. The truth is that only a tiny percentage of those songs (we heard someone say 5%) are ever listened to by another human being. It’s as endless and frightening as the cosmos — nay, death itself. Yet, down in that deep, digital Mariana Trench, that void of unlistening, there are untold startling and curious treasures — irreverent, enigmatic creators; wild-eyed, impractical romantics; undiscovered jazz savants; or maybe just some regular folks who wrestled lightning into a bottle just once then forgot where they put it. They’re truly all legends to us. We howl their names and speak of them as demigods. We’ve gone deeper than most would dare — digital residue forever under our fingernails — and have pulled these gems from the depths on this collection. As we passed the hot foily back and forth, he told me many things about the dark future of this once great nation; about my coming divorce; about how I'd be fired from my music industry job by the end of the next week. But he also told me about a burgeoning underground scene of jazz musicians inspired in equal measure by Miles Davis's 1986 new jack cheese triumph 'Tutu' and the soundtrack to ToeJam \u0026amp; Earl, a 1991 Sega Genesis video game based on the titular funky alien rappers who must rebuild their crashed spacecraft in hopes to return to their home planet, Funkotron. He said this scene was vast and would begin its rise to notoriety around 2023. He called it \"Toejazz.\" Travis gave me a foggy, jet printed CDR of his own music, but I lost it in said divorce. Ever since, I've been scouring the depths of every digital service provider hoping for the day Travis might upload his music. While I've yet to find his music, I believe I have uncovered the percolating online community of jazz musicians of which Travis foretold. Through his music, Marley discovered a universal language for Love — romantic, motherly, brotherly, communal and even that prickly love we may hold for our homeland. With some of the most iconic opening notes in recorded history, the effect of his songs on a listener is instantaneous. Within the first few bars of a Marley tune, the most igneous faces in a room melt into glowing, magma-smiles. Global, modern folk songs with melodies as wound into our DNA as “Here Comes The Sun” or “What A Wonderful World.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eJust before the holidays, we asked Norway’s Konradsen to choose some of their favorite Marley songs for a ULYSSA release. For years now, we’ve found a great deal of comfort in Jenny Sabel’s sultry, mulled wine voice and the thoughtful, intricate music she makes with Eirik Vildgren. Seemed like the world could use a little Marley from these two. Their takes here are spare and intimate — just that singular voice like a glass of warm milk and the most tender, minimal keys. You can hear the felt brushing the strings inside the piano and the soft thud of the sustain peddle. We’re pretty sure you can even hear the wick of a candle sizzling softly somewhere in the room\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e. Subtle and gorgeous, these pieces underscore Marley’s melodic brilliance, breaking each down to its most crucial ingredients.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe tapped our friends Bo White and Jonathan Rado for dub-not-dub reworks of Konradsen’s covers. White’s “Waiting In Vain (For Your Dub)” is the loose and lit DIY house show we all miss right now. And Rado’s “You Can Be Dubbed” takes a cue from Disintegration Loops and The Caretaker as the track decays before your very ears. And yet, its heartwarming and hopeful sentiment remains powerfully intact. That’s the potency of Bob Marley and Konradsen. For years now, we’ve found a great deal of comfort in Jenny Sabel’s sultry, mulled wine voice and the thoughtful, intricate music she makes with Eirik Vildgren. Seemed like the world could use a little Marley from these two. Their takes here are spare and intimate — just that singular voice like a glass of warm milk and the most tender, minimal keys. You can hear the felt brushing the strings inside the piano and the soft thud of the sustain peddle. We’re pretty sure you can even hear the wick of a candle sizzling softly somewhere in the room\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e. And Rado’s “You Can Be Dubbed” takes a cue from Disintegration Loops and The Caretaker as the track decays before your very ears.
