Taking the idea of nostalgia and turning it into a fog of passing sounds, “Left Out” is both familiar and completely disorienting. This 90 minute sound collage, meticulously crafted like most of Kasselman’s work, also sounds as though it was pulled from a burning garbage can. Though recorded over four years, all these pieces are tied together thematically by water. Some of the source material was literally recorded underwater using hydrophone mics. Other pieces were written to capture the emotional parallels of floating and drowning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere's no good explanation as to why this wasn't released sooner. Time moves quickly and I'm generally not one to look back. In this case, I was on to the next project before sending this one out to the world. It’s been revealing listening to it with fresh ears and noticing the unintended canonic feeling these pieces have together. I get nostalgic hearing the vulnerability that I hadn't realized was so inherent in this music. I'm reminded of the exuberance of new love and the limitless feeling of self discovery as it relates to one's art process.
