His new album on Puremagnetik Tapes wields the emotional complexity of music to create a sound world of memory, calm, frustration and hope.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eRemembering The Sea pulses in slow waves that surround the listener, gestures that start in the distance but detonate out of the speakers with various levels of force, from a sigh to an explosion. At times, pulse forms into beats, moving with measured determination. And as the title hints, the music is never far from the natural world, nor waves themselves.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“I am lucky enough to be surrounded by trees and birds. I began deep listening to nature, then recording it and then ultimately sitting down at the piano—with the doors open—composing with nature.” That’s “Will,” with its opening piano phrases accompanied by chirping birds, a cello morphing into a sinuous buzz that could be bees in a garden.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor Salchow, like many millions, the world has collapsed into an interior space of home, of screens, of mind. Frustrated by his lack of progress on a concurrent project, he turned to his bass guitar and his effects boxes, and over two sessions produced a kind of music that was a departure for him: “Less is an approach to Hauntology and drone like I’ve never done those before.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Most of my recordings are only with the bass guitar and effects,” he points out. \"I have used field recordings on \"A better tomorrow\" and \"Blur\" and have treated vinyl crackles a bit at the end of \"Melancholia\" so that they generated an electronic vibe. All in all you might be surprised how the bass guitar is able to sound and fool you being a synthesizer.\" Less is a textured, sensual audio fabric of electricity, the sound of voltage flowing through equipment, pushing against impedance, expanding into a sonic architecture of places: the sound of still life, objects, haunted spaces.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring the pandemic lockdown, he listened to hauntology recordings and wanted to direct his efforts at the genre, “somehow, with my own ideas. My limitation on this release was bass, a bunch of pedals on two pedalboards, some dusty vinyl crackles and a few\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e of my field recordings.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is something of a hardware album, a duet between Grenzler and his boxes, especially the Zoia modular effects synthesizer. He created a patch in the device “named ‘Melancholia,’ that loops, chops, and pitches down,” looking for a darker and more industrial bottom than in his other music. Out of that came the track “Melancholia.” The central “location” of the album, it’s a place into which the music directs the ear, a churning soundscape of uneasy memories and dramatic stabs of sensation. From here, An Moku guides the listener back out through the final track, “Absent.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“I knew I wanted to let the bass sound differently,” he explains. “You hear walls of sound full of movement and voltage, but less of the bass. One gesture moves in place of another, emptying the stage of the imagination for something expansive to arrive. Software use was minimal, nothing other than EQ and compression, and some of the music was “printed to tape,” Frank notes. The warm, palpable sounds come from an Oberheim Xpander and a Make Noise Shared System, often working in tandem across generative synth patches. Frank built the tracks out of small segments\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e that balance between repetition and change.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Some tracks have simple motifs,” Frank explains, “while others are more ambient beds or electronic experimental.” That experimental sense runs throughout, but it’s not about musical form as much as it is about stasis and uncertainty. Uncertainty and social inactivity became, for so many, an experiment in living, in finding what figurative and literal internal life might be like with society as a whole mostly shut down. The question for Frank was less “What might music sound like?” than “What might life feel like?”.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNoontide suggests that life might feel like the sound of the past time-warped into the present. The unmistakable, evocative sounds of the Xpander, and the hardware-based generative means, evoke the classic production of John Carpenter and Vangelis’s early soundtracks.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFrank hopes that Noontide “provides an abstract but cohesive experience that takes the listener on a bit of an adventure.” The simplest, shortest lone journey can be an adventure, especially in a time when it’s not even clear where you can go, and what the world might look like next month, or even tomorrow. Sacks warms up his hands, stabbing out quick runs, testing the dynamics and the sonorities he can get through the pedals, the reverb of the instrument and room.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eHis thoughts are heard in real time. “You’re basically\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e bringing your entire experience in music to that point,” to the improvisations. The title track is a blues that’s a dedication to the late, great Montreal native Bley, a pianist Sacks admired for his broad range and questioning, even mischievous attitude toward improvisation. “Bounce” could be a sequence of chords from a Monk tune, altered by Sacks’s memory, but here the pianist uses his hands and the pedals to carve out an uncanny articulated sound, something close to previous Puremagnetik Tapes releases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSacks’s approach to the music fits easily into the contemporary electronic music aesthetic. Genre, style, and form are all the musician’s responsibility - the only rule is to make them work. The experiments in rhythm of “Yoyo,” the haunting, unresolved phrases of “Future,” are expressions of a searching, open attitude, found in listeners as well as musicians. Sacks feels “there might be a meeting of the minds,” over Montreal. “Someone who gets past the genres will have a connection” with everything on the album. As he describes, Montreal is both album and process. The opening two tracks, “Arrival” and “Awakens,” are the sound of that process in real time. Sacks warms up his hands, stabbing out quick runs, testing the dynamics and the sonorities he can get through the pedals, the reverb of the instrument and room.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eHis thoughts are heard in real time. “You’re basically\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e bringing your entire experience in music to that point,” to the improvisations. The title track is a blues that’s a dedication to the late, great Montreal native Bley, a pianist Sacks admired for his broad range and questioning, even mischievous attitude toward improvisation. “Bounce” could be a sequence of chords from a Monk tune, altered by Sacks’s memory, but here the pianist uses his hands and the pedals to carve out an uncanny articulated sound, something close to previous Puremagnetik Tapes releases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSacks’s approach to the music fits easily into the contemporary electronic music aesthetic. Genre, style, and form are all the musician’s responsibility - the only rule is to make them work. The experiments in rhythm of “Yoyo,” the haunting, unresolved phrases of “Future,” are expressions of a searching, open attitude, found in listeners as well as musicians. Sacks feels “there might be a meeting of the minds,” over Montreal. “Someone who gets past the genres will have a connection” with everything on the album.
