With a mutual love of jazz, experimental music and avant-garde compositions, the two formed an immediate bond as musicians. On their new album, The Music of Hildegard von Bingen Part 1, they bring their open-ended approach to four of von Bingen’s pieces along with one original composition.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDoxas was introduced to von Bingen during his studies at McGill University in Montreal. “My counterpoint teacher spoke about her holistic approach to writing music. The natural world played a big part in her compositional voice. I’ve gleaned inspiration from her, allowing outside influences in my life to blend with my musical ideas. When I improvise with Micah, he often includes drones in his sound, while I play single note melodies or improvisations. This pairing is similar to early music, with a melody over the cantus firmus.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“We realized much of our work sounds like early medieval or Renaissance music,” Frank said. “We searched for a composer to help confine our composition and production process to these early music elements. Von Bingen’s compositions were perfect for our production and instrumental style.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWith the help of their guests – harp player, Mary Lattimore; guitarist, David Torn; bass player, Michael Formanek and drummer, Jason Nazary – the duo delves deeply into the nuances of von Bingen’s compositions.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe album opens with their own “Silva Ignis”. A continuous tape loop is accented by a sprinkling of percussives and synthetic voices. Layers of room tones and field recordings interweave in a dialog of stray sonic objects. It delivers an introduction to the album that is both a nod to the duo’s concrète influences and a showcase of their intrepid recording processes.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe second track, “Ave Maria” unfolds as a spacious narrative highlighting a masterful harp performance by Mary Lattimore. At its onset, a lone tape loop introduces an approaching spectrum of intricate sound design. Doxas’s woodwind voice sits atop the mix with shy interspersed, melodic fragments.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFrank and Doxas were crafting “O Ignee Spiritus” by layering cassette loops of woodwinds, electronics and the eventual clarinet melody when they reached out to guitarist, David Torn, for the final touches. Torn’s iconic guitar adds bass accents to swirling soundscapes, complemented by distorted, crashing crescendos that slowly fade into silence.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn the piece, “O Vis Eternitatis”, the duo asked their friend and frequent collaborator, Kodomo, to take their track into his crystalline sound world and see what happens. The result is a cinematic sequence of detailed sound design interspersed with von Bingen’s original melody - played by Doxas - and Frank’s modular synthesizer flourishes.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Nunc Aperuit” was a late addition to the album. Frank and Doxas had just invited bassist Michael Formanek to join them as their special guest at one of their residency evenings and we’re so enthralled with his playing that they decided to add another track to the recording. Formanek’s mastery of his instrument is evident as he delivers the melody with a caring yet powerful interpretation.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Because the pieces resemble one another on paper, the challenge was creating different sonic worlds for each piece, while honoring the compositions,” Doxas said. “Micah and I grew from this experience by having to work within self-imposed musical limits, to honor another composer. On their new album, The Music of Hildegard von Bingen Part 1, they bring their open-ended approach to four of von Bingen’s pieces along with one original composition.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDoxas was introduced to von Bingen during his studies at McGill University in Montreal. “My counterpoint teacher spoke about her holistic approach to writing music. The natural world played a big part in her compositional voice. I’ve gleaned inspiration from her, allowing outside influences in my life to blend with my musical ideas. When I improvise with Micah, he often includes drones in his sound, while I play single note melodies or improvisations. This pairing is similar to early music, with a melody over the cantus firmus.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“We realized much of our work sounds like early medieval or Renaissance music,” Frank said. “We searched for a composer to help confine our composition and production process to these early music elements. A continuous tape loop is accented by a sprinkling of percussives and synthetic voices. Layers of room tones and field recordings interweave in a dialog of stray sonic objects. It delivers an introduction to the album that is both a nod to the duo’s concrète influences and a showcase of their intrepid recording processes.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe second track, “Ave Maria” unfolds as a spacious narrative highlighting a masterful harp performance by Mary Lattimore. At its onset, a lone tape loop introduces an approaching spectrum of intricate sound design. Doxas’s woodwind voice sits atop the mix with shy interspersed, melodic fragments.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFrank and Doxas were crafting “O Ignee Spiritus” by layering cassette loops of woodwinds, electronics and the eventual clarinet melody when they reached out to guitarist, David Torn, for the final touches. Torn’s iconic guitar adds bass accents to swirling soundscapes, complemented by distorted, crashing crescendos that slowly fade into silence.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn the piece, “O Vis Eternitatis”, the duo asked their friend and frequent collaborator, Kodomo, to take their track into his crystalline sound world and see what happens. The result is a cinematic sequence of detailed sound design interspersed with von Bingen’s original melody - played by Doxas - and Frank’s modular synthesizer flourishes.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Nunc Aperuit” was a late addition to the album. Frank and Doxas had just invited bassist Michael Formanek to join them as their special guest at one of their residency evenings and we’re so enthralled with his playing that they decided to add another track to the recording. Formanek’s mastery of his instrument is evident as he delivers the melody with a caring yet powerful interpretation.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Because the pieces resemble one another on paper, the challenge was creating different sonic worlds for each piece, while honoring the compositions,” Doxas said. “Micah and I grew from this experience by having to work within self-imposed musical limits, to honor another composer. Frustrated by his lack of progress on a concurrent project, he turned to his bass guitar and his effects boxes, and over two sessions produced a kind of music that was a departure for him: “Less is an approach to Hauntology and drone like I’ve never done those before.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Most of my recordings are only with the bass guitar and effects,” he points out. \"I have used field recordings on \"A better tomorrow\" and \"Blur\" and have treated vinyl crackles a bit at the end of \"Melancholia\" so that they generated an electronic vibe. All in all you might be surprised how the bass guitar is able to sound and fool you being a synthesizer.\" Less is a textured, sensual audio fabric of electricity, the sound of voltage flowing through equipment, pushing against impedance, expanding into a sonic architecture of places: the sound of still life, objects, haunted spaces.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring the pandemic lockdown, he listened to hauntology recordings and wanted to direct his efforts at the genre, “somehow, with my own ideas. I wanted Less to be abstract. I wanted to limit myself and had to rethink. My limitation on this release was bass, a bunch of pedals on two pedalboards, some dusty vinyl crackles and a few\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e of my field recordings.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is something of a hardware album, a duet between Grenzler and his boxes, especially the Zoia modular effects synthesizer. He created a patch in the device “named ‘Melancholia,’ that loops, chops, and pitches down,” looking for a darker and more industrial bottom than in his other music. Out of that came the track “Melancholia.” The central “location” of the album, it’s a place into which the music directs the ear, a churning soundscape of uneasy memories and dramatic stabs of sensation. From here, An Moku guides the listener back out through the final track, “Absent.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“I knew I wanted to let the bass sound differently,” he explains. “You hear walls of sound full of movement and voltage, but less of the bass. All in all it is less of everything.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut less of everything, on Less, produces more. Like the natura morta paintings of artists like Giorgio Morandi, tracks like “A Better Tomorrow” and “Forgetting” seem to just turn on, there before our ears in the way an image sits before our eyes. Frustrated by his lack of progress on a concurrent project, he turned to his bass guitar and his effects boxes, and over two sessions produced a kind of music that was a departure for him: “Less is an approach to Hauntology and drone like I’ve never done those before.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Most of my recordings are only with the bass guitar and effects,” he points out. \"I have used field recordings on \"A better tomorrow\" and \"Blur\" and have treated vinyl crackles a bit at the end of \"Melancholia\" so that they generated an electronic vibe. All in all you might be surprised how the bass guitar is able to sound and fool you being a synthesizer.\" Less is a textured, sensual audio fabric of electricity, the sound of voltage flowing through equipment, pushing against impedance, expanding into a sonic architecture of places: the sound of still life, objects, haunted spaces.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring the pandemic lockdown, he listened to hauntology recordings and wanted to direct his efforts at the genre, “somehow, with my own ideas. I wanted Less to be abstract. I wanted to limit myself and had to rethink. My limitation on this release was bass, a bunch of pedals on two pedalboards, some dusty vinyl crackles and a few\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e of my field recordings.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is something of a hardware album, a duet between Grenzler and his boxes, especially the Zoia modular effects synthesizer. He created a patch in the device “named ‘Melancholia,’ that loops, chops, and pitches down,” looking for a darker and more industrial bottom than in his other music. Out of that came the track “Melancholia.” The central “location” of the album, it’s a place into which the music directs the ear, a churning soundscape of uneasy memories and dramatic stabs of sensation. From here, An Moku guides the listener back out through the final track, “Absent.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“I knew I wanted to let the bass sound differently,” he explains. “You hear walls of sound full of movement and voltage, but less of the bass. All in all it is less of everything.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut less of everything, on Less, produces more. Like the natura morta paintings of artists like Giorgio Morandi, tracks like “A Better Tomorrow” and “Forgetting” seem to just turn on, there before our ears in the way an image sits before our eyes. The title track is a blues that’s a dedication to the late, great Montreal native Bley, a pianist Sacks admired for his broad range and questioning, even mischievous attitude toward improvisation. “Bounce” could be a sequence of chords from a Monk tune, altered by Sacks’s memory, but here the pianist uses his hands and the pedals to carve out an uncanny articulated sound, something close to previous Puremagnetik Tapes releases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSacks’s approach to the music fits easily into the contemporary electronic music aesthetic. Genre, style, and form are all the musician’s responsibility - the only rule is to make them work. The experiments in rhythm of “Yoyo,” the haunting, unresolved phrases of “Future,” are expressions of a searching, open attitude, found in listeners as well as musicians. Sacks feels “there might be a meeting of the minds,” over Montreal. “Someone who gets past the genres will have a connection” with everything on the album. The title track is a blues that’s a dedication to the late, great Montreal native Bley, a pianist Sacks admired for his broad range and questioning, even mischievous attitude toward improvisation. “Bounce” could be a sequence of chords from a Monk tune, altered by Sacks’s memory, but here the pianist uses his hands and the pedals to carve out an uncanny articulated sound, something close to previous Puremagnetik Tapes releases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSacks’s approach to the music fits easily into the contemporary electronic music aesthetic. Genre, style, and form are all the musician’s responsibility - the only rule is to make them work. The experiments in rhythm of “Yoyo,” the haunting, unresolved phrases of “Future,” are expressions of a searching, open attitude, found in listeners as well as musicians. Sacks feels “there might be a meeting of the minds,” over Montreal. “Someone who gets past the genres will have a connection” with everything on the album.
