Inner Ocean:

" Mathème is a study in the palimpsest nature of memory; a decaying architecture in continual shifting recreation, constructed of opaque sound fragments, recontextualized and combined to create nonlinear narratives of dream logic. These liminal collages reflect and amplify the intractable gulf between signifier and signified. Here, the piano is not a piano, it is the swell of the tide; a thunderstorm manifests its stochastic elements inside of an underground train, around boot steps on frozen ground. Sonic textures woven into a mirage of near melodies swirl around the tender pre-lingual sound of an infant’s voice. Around the hum of a crowd of drunkards billowing cigarette smoke, a symphony emerges. We listen carefully, here is the orchestra of all things."

With a reverential nod toward Manuel Göttsching’s 1975 psychedelic minimalist opus Inventions for Electric Guitar, each sound on this recording originated on a guitar—whether standard 6-string electric or acoustic, baritone, electric 12-string, or lap-steel—played by guitarist Nick Millevoi. Those sounds were then shaped and reassembled by Zach Goldstein, who sculpted each of the record’s six compositions to challenge the way we hear the guitar.
