Here is a series of compositions grounded in improvisations, thoughtfully culled and layered with an openhearted embrace of happy accidents. Just as her dexterity as a cellist is evident on \"'Join me, everybody',\" equally so is her interest in the din outside her window. Elsewhere on \"Second Picture of the Same Weather Pattern,\" richly resonant acoustic figures share space with the sparkler static of radio transmissions. The playfulness of the title of \"Moon Bean,\"--the album's glowing centerpiece--suggests that very glow could be coming from something beyond our skies or, conversely, held within our hands. The exceptional approach Lia exhibits so confidently on The Ceiling Reposes, her acclaimed LP from earlier this year, was already in sharp focus here; it's a privilege to collaborate with her on this rerelease.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhat makes Too Small to be a Plain so successful are its inviting juxtapositions. Here is a series of compositions grounded in improvisations, thoughtfully culled and layered with an openhearted embrace of happy accidents. Just as her dexterity as a cellist is evident on \"'Join me, everybody',\" equally so is her interest in the din outside her window. Elsewhere on \"Second Picture of the Same Weather Pattern,\" richly resonant acoustic figures share space with the sparkler static of radio transmissions. The playfulness of the title of \"Moon Bean,\"--the album's glowing centerpiece--suggests that very glow could be coming from something beyond our skies or, conversely, held within our hands. Despite Lia having performed and recorded all of the work herself, the album is guided by\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e her years of collaboration with dozens of others and the final product is clearly the work of someone who listens with curiosity and empathy. Sounds that are often unpleasant to him--doing dishes in the sink, the din of the Chicago L--were intentionally used as compositional tools alongside his now-familiar elements of synthesis, chance, and melody. There’s an uncommonly beautiful tactility in the results, which can be found in the album’s first amoebic rustlings and continues to be felt in its final, bubbling notes. Certainly part of what makes Secrets From A Squirrel so successful is its flow from one piece to the next, but it also evokes a kind of circulatory system—and the title of one track, “You Could Almost Hear It Sighing,” is an apt description of the album as a whole.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eZander’s visual art exists on its own but complements his music in ways that only underscore the strengths of both. Layering and light; collage and repurposing; tonality and humor—no matter the medium, his work is searching and gently generous, like the smile of\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e someone who really understands you. To honor this side of Zander’s practice, an 8-page full color booklet featuring his collages accompanies the album. Central to the film’s atmosphere is its arid yet spacious score, a collaboration between Talya Cooper (previously of Household) and John Atkinson (of Aa), whose soundtrack for Asasin in Lege inaugurated Florabelle.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs an LP, Plains grows out of elements of the film’s original score, but it’s also very much its own thing—a quartet of glimmering, weightless pieces that, free from the need to score certain scenes of certain lengths, unfold and envelope at their own pace. Anchoring the album is the side-long “Chillien”, a delicate, harmonic bloom punctuated by the whirs and clicks of Cooper’s guitar and voice. Atkinson, taking control of the processed elements of composition, allows the b-side sequence to grow more expansive and dynamic with each track, maintaining an unmistakably warm glow.
