Then Philipp started playing in the motorik krautrock duo Zement, and as Felix had been building a reputation of his own as an audio engineer with Aetherweight, he mastered some of their releases. Then came 2020 and all its hegemonial narratives. In May of that year, Philipp played a livestream solo\/soli show for a club he was involved in back in the days. 10 tapes were made. A short power breakdown that evening killed Heinzel’s synthesizer, which was his main source of sound. He then started to throw himself into a freestyle set with machines lent by the other musicians – and he dove headfirst into a slowly-building, neo-baroque organ impression of melancholic beauty and an emotional openness that affected the whole room.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"This was a fine example of how Fließgewässer functions – Heinzelbäcker incorporates what surrounds him and transforms it into sound. „Firat | Dîjla“ works just as that. An impromptu session with Marta Morant on clarinet and Nicolas Dobson on drums that started after watching a documentary on the ruthless building of dams in south-east Anatolia by Turkey’s demagogic president Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, with additional synth work overdubbed afterwards, turned into a stream of free-flowing new age sounds with\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e references to anatolian folk music popping up here and there, tender percussion improvs and refined clarinet expressions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe sole track on the B-side of the tape – „Below the stork’s nest“ – is a sombre elegy, alternating between an endless dulcimer rite, surfacing field recordings, a trumpet resembling the cornet work of Cosey Fanni Tutti and: a violin. The original version of „Firat | Dîjla“ featured a lot of quotes from the BBC-produced documentary „So Water is Turkey’s Oil“. Shying away from the fear of copyright infringements, we asked Heinzel to remove them; about half a day later, in true Fließgewässer fashion, he sent a whole new set of files with him playing a deranged violin instead of the original quotes. That was the final point, the being-struck-by-lightning-moment when we knew this one was perfectly finished. A short power breakdown that evening killed Heinzel’s synthesizer, which was his main source of sound. He then started to throw himself into a freestyle set with machines lent by the other musicians – and he dove headfirst into a slowly-building, neo-baroque organ impression of melancholic beauty and an emotional openness that affected the whole room.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"This was a fine example of how Fließgewässer functions – Heinzelbäcker incorporates what surrounds him and transforms it into sound. „Firat | Dîjla“ works just as that. An impromptu session with Marta Morant on clarinet and Nicolas Dobson on drums that started after watching a documentary on the ruthless building of dams in south-east Anatolia by Turkey’s demagogic president Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, with additional synth work overdubbed afterwards, turned into a stream of free-flowing new age sounds with\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e references to anatolian folk music popping up here and there, tender percussion improvs and refined clarinet expressions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe sole track on the B-side of the tape – „Below the stork’s nest“ – is a sombre elegy, alternating between an endless dulcimer rite, surfacing field recordings, a trumpet resembling the cornet work of Cosey Fanni Tutti and: a violin. The original version of „Firat | Dîjla“ featured a lot of quotes from the BBC-produced documentary „So Water is Turkey’s Oil“. Shying away from the fear of copyright infringements, we asked Heinzel to remove them; about half a day later, in true Fließgewässer fashion, he sent a whole new set of files with him playing a deranged violin instead of the original quotes. That was the final point, the being-struck-by-lightning-moment when we knew this one was perfectly finished. On the one hand, there’s the plague age and its shady esotericism - crystals, bowls, faith over facts; the healing force of of music, soothing inner demons as well as external bacteria. Like a matching piece of puzzle, on the other hand we have this neoliberal tradition-turned-malpractice of selfcare, mindfulness and neurolinguistic programming. And, third, a direct line to draw from the new age to the ongoing talk about social media dieting and hyping a wooky woodwork romanticism. A hand-made escapism full of reverb-laden wind chimes in the dystopia of our actual reality. Dystopia...there always was a branch of ambient music that didn’t grew into that realm of mystic realism, the one which relied more on the substances and narrative means of science fiction to exaggerate and focus in on real time life.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eSwiss duo LEVELS work more in that last vein. Their chilly sound aesthetic is stylized enough to work as the soundtrack for a lower-level alternative reality. Fitting musics to drive down an emptied, endless Autobahn. Futurist small towns: clean, friendly, undistinguished hospitality. A creepy discretion. An interieur with much too much zen. And then, there’s this delicate\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e disruption, as in „Central Activation“. It sucks you in. Tracks like „Auto-Generated“ are numbing extractions of an all-encompassing entity. Heavily processed scraps of voice add up to this feeling of a totally surreal surround.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn come the drums: facets of small patterns which approach and depart from another, forming vivid, wobbling sculptures - listen to „Searching For Alesta“ or „Detectors“ to get a first grasp of that. Or to the Hassell-esque dub of \"Scattered Message\". Level’s evocative sound design lives off a rich use of the lower and medium sonic spectrum while making use of a relatively small pallette of sounds. In contrast to their first, self-titled release on Umor Rex, they cut the rougher edges in favor of a smoother production, which is a total win in terms of developing their own, autonomous sound world. Cineastic at times, the music always stays sober and focused, but unfolds a stunning complexity on closer listen. On the one hand, there’s the plague age and its shady esotericism - crystals, bowls, faith over facts; the healing force of of music, soothing inner demons as well as external bacteria. Like a matching piece of puzzle, on the other hand we have this neoliberal tradition-turned-malpractice of selfcare, mindfulness and neurolinguistic programming. And, third, a direct line to draw from the new age to the ongoing talk about social media dieting and hyping a wooky woodwork romanticism. A hand-made escapism full of reverb-laden wind chimes in the dystopia of our actual reality. Dystopia...there always was a branch of ambient music that didn’t grew into that realm of mystic realism, the one which relied more on the substances and narrative means of science fiction to exaggerate and focus in on real time life.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eSwiss duo LEVELS work more in that last vein. Their chilly sound aesthetic is stylized enough to work as the soundtrack for a lower-level alternative reality. Fitting musics to drive down an emptied, endless Autobahn. Futurist small towns: clean, friendly, undistinguished hospitality. A creepy discretion. An interieur with much too much zen. And then, there’s this delicate\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e disruption, as in „Central Activation“. It sucks you in. Tracks like „Auto-Generated“ are numbing extractions of an all-encompassing entity. Heavily processed scraps of voice add up to this feeling of a totally surreal surround.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn come the drums: facets of small patterns which approach and depart from another, forming vivid, wobbling sculptures - listen to „Searching For Alesta“ or „Detectors“ to get a first grasp of that. Or to the Hassell-esque dub of \"Scattered Message\". Level’s evocative sound design lives off a rich use of the lower and medium sonic spectrum while making use of a relatively small pallette of sounds. In contrast to their first, self-titled release on Umor Rex, they cut the rougher edges in favor of a smoother production, which is a total win in terms of developing their own, autonomous sound world. Cineastic at times, the music always stays sober and focused, but unfolds a stunning complexity on closer listen. He is trained by the traditions of the international underground and its aesthetics, from cut and paste techniques to the aesthetics of dub, from the harmonic scales of post-punk to the self-imposed restrictions of minimalism. He works as a visual artist, operates the Noir Age label and releases his own music as Night Foundation.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eHis compositions are fairly minimal - four tracks of arranged loops on synthesizers, guitar and percussion are mostly enough to produce the otherworldly, hypnotic sounds of the Night Foundation. It is extremly structured music, yet, repetition and minimal changes are crucial here. As soothing as eerie, it cancels out time. Levitation music. But audible is also a certain longing, a feeling of loss and something much darker lurking underneath. Hence, the apt title „Souvenir“ - it is an object with a past, a vessel for a certain memory, a symbol for a desire bigger than the sum of its parts. A nostalgia that is not pathetic; the analog body is still warm, and „Souvenir“ feels more like a letting go than a sappy memory. He is trained by the traditions of the international underground and its aesthetics, from cut and paste techniques to the aesthetics of dub, from the harmonic scales of post-punk to the self-imposed restrictions of minimalism. It is extremly structured music, yet, repetition and minimal changes are crucial here. As soothing as eerie, it cancels out time. Levitation music. But audible is also a certain longing, a feeling of loss and something much darker lurking underneath. Hence, the apt title „Souvenir“ - it is an object with a past, a vessel for a certain memory, a symbol for a desire bigger than the sum of its parts. A nostalgia that is not pathetic; the analog body is still warm, and „Souvenir“ feels more like a letting go than a sappy memory.
