Inspired by Leonard Cohen, “With the Other Hand” began with a guitar line written by Volden that was passed along to Hval who began rearranging the chords beyond recognition. “The result was a structure of verse and chorus, a pop song\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e whispering about someone’s mysterious journey through a street, a building, and a stage,” the band says. “The chorus goes like this: ‘With the other hand I open rooms \/ With the first one I write,’ describing two parts of something - a creative process, or two parts of the unconscious. Carmen Villain’s close miking techniques and subtle electronic post-production create space for Orellana to dive deep into both the flutes’ dynamic capacity for rhythm and melodic repetition, as well as the meta-musical sounds usually excluded from recordings of the instrument: parting lips, deep inhalation, hand movement, finger placement, tapping, exhalation, and a range of overtones whistling, humming and screeching louder than the note\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e generated.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOccasionally, multiple flute tracks are combined and panned wide into a series of evolving sonic tapestries that recall various folk flute traditions, as well Maggie Payne, early Kraftwerk’s kosmische flute experimentation, the free improvisation of Don Cherry, or the subtle low brass meditations of Robin Hayward. Importantly, none of the flute tracks were made as overdubs but rather fused together in post-production into uncanny rhythmic parallels, capturing both Orellana’s internal clock and an overall sense of aleatoric composition.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn “El Jardin I” – “El Jardin IV”, Orellana runs through dozens of slight melodic variations, gradually decreasing the airflow until the tones transform into overtones; a soft wheezing generated by final breaths and eventually reborn as new melodic figures. The intimacy of both the field recordings and Orellana’s playing puts the listener not only in nature but almost inside of her mouth. Music and lung capacity become vital signs – and, in their absence, signs of passing in physical and sonic transformation. On album closer “San Fabian”, these themes merge into a final, trill-heavy, hallucinatory whirlwind of electronics and manipulated gasps. Her set of hushed, jazzy flourishes and pregnant pauses is so well realised that it’s hard to believe they were improvised, while the “kitchen feel” of the room recording (as Marhaug describes it) enhances a sense of brittle intimacy. Much in the same way that Dominique Lawalrée imbued his ostensibly naive music with glimpses into a multifaceted inner life, Lauvdal explores an ocean of feeling through the most humble components, transporting us through some alchemical act of emotional teleportation. Lauvdal avoids meandering flights of fancy, instead exposing a filigree level of detail and beauty through the cracks of her spartan recordings. There are no arbitrary found sounds, no sound design or overdubs, just Lauvdal and her Wurlitzer, occasionally singing at a barely perceptible volume in the background. If there’s melancholy, it’s not self absorbed or effacing, but trapped behind sunny rays and poetic, romantic phrases. One of those effortlessly impactful records we’ve not been able to stop listening to for a while now, ‘Farewell to Faraway Friends’ is apparently the first in an ongoing series. Her set of hushed, jazzy flourishes and pregnant pauses is so well realised that it’s hard to believe they were improvised, while the “kitchen feel” of the room recording (as Marhaug describes it) enhances a sense of brittle intimacy. Much in the same way that Dominique Lawalrée imbued his ostensibly naive music with glimpses into a multifaceted inner life, Lauvdal explores an ocean of feeling through the most humble components, transporting us through some alchemical act of emotional teleportation. Lauvdal avoids meandering flights of fancy, instead exposing a filigree level of detail and beauty through the cracks of her spartan recordings. There are no arbitrary found sounds, no sound design or overdubs, just Lauvdal and her Wurlitzer, occasionally singing at a barely perceptible volume in the background. If there’s melancholy, it’s not self absorbed or effacing, but trapped behind sunny rays and poetic, romantic phrases. One of those effortlessly impactful records we’ve not been able to stop listening to for a while now, ‘Farewell to Faraway Friends’ is apparently the first in an ongoing series.
