In Magneto Mori sounds from Vienna’s past and present are conjoined in a stew of semi-degraded audiotape. Using a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder sounds from around the city were recorded direct to tape over a two-day period. This tape was then cut into fragments and buried in a hole in the ground with a number of souvenir fridge magnets that erased the portions of the tape that they came into contact with. After several days steeped in the muddy earth of a Viennese garden the remaining audio fragments were exhumed, washed, dried and spliced back together in random order. The deliberate distressing and erosion of these present-day recordings results in artificially degraded sounds that fast-forward the effects of time, disrupting the perceived chronology of this audio matter.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring the tapes interment, old cassette, Dictaphone and reel-to-reel tapes were gathered from local flea markets and additional field recordings were made around the city. The addition of these found sounds stretches the timescale from just the short\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e period spent making location recordings to as far back as fifty years into the past. All of these elements provided the raw materials for a radiophonic composition that represents a portrait of Vienna in both place and time; an archaeological excavation of found sounds, lost fragments, buried memories and magnetic traces. In Magneto Mori sounds from Vienna’s past and present are conjoined in a stew of semi-degraded audiotape. Using a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder sounds from around the city were recorded direct to tape over a two-day period. This tape was then cut into fragments and buried in a hole in the ground with a number of souvenir fridge magnets that erased the portions of the tape that they came into contact with. After several days steeped in the muddy earth of a Viennese garden the remaining audio fragments were exhumed, washed, dried and spliced back together in random order. The deliberate distressing and erosion of these present-day recordings results in artificially degraded sounds that fast-forward the effects of time, disrupting the perceived chronology of this audio matter.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring the tapes interment, old cassette, Dictaphone and reel-to-reel tapes were gathered from local flea markets and additional field recordings were made around the city. The addition of these found sounds stretches the timescale from just the short\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e period spent making location recordings to as far back as fifty years into the past. All of these elements provided the raw materials for a radiophonic composition that represents a portrait of Vienna in both place and time; an archaeological excavation of found sounds, lost fragments, buried memories and magnetic traces. The music brings to mind afternoons spent between reality and fantasy by a child who gets lost in nature. The songs of Folk Tapes contain the same essence as dreams that come to one at dawn.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eSide A suggests the soft images of the film \"Picnic at Hanging Rock\", while Side B is a musical fairy tale about a little girl who turns into a white donkey. At times the music imagines Nico falling in love with the harmonium during adolescence or Vashti Bunyan performing a soundtrack for an eastern European animated film.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFolk Tapes is Chirico's official debut as a songwriter (she is a singer with a fruitful career in contemporary classical and sacred music). It anticipates the release of another short work that we hope will come out by the end of the year, a 7-inch EP composed of two songs: a reinterpretation of the traditional Neapolitan\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Christmas carol \"Quanno Nascette Ninno\", from which comes the most famous \"From Starry Skies Thou Comest\", and an original song inspired by a Rainer Maria Rilke poem.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e---\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMaria Valentina Chirico is a singer with a baroque, classical and contemporary music background. She graduated in vocal chamber music, studied in Berlin and Turin, and has performed in various theatres and festivals, expanding her repertoire of sacred and contemporary music.\u003cbr\u003eShe founded Tubipora Musica, a duo based on original music, improvisation, ancient and modern repertoire for harp, vocals, harmonium and electronics.\u003cbr\u003eShe has been in love with the sound of the harmonium since she was a child, and later started collecting ‘forgotten’ harmoniums from churches and older musicians.
