Heat Crimes:
"Mesmerising modal cyberfolk and future-primitivism from Thessaloniki’s weirdo enigma Christian Love Forum, manifesting on the awesome Heat Crimes label following their chthonic zingers by The Ephemeron Loop, Mariam Rezaei and CRAVE - a big RIYL László Hortobágyi, Christos Chondropoulos, Muslimgauze, Bootee, Mark Snow.
Adored by adventurous souls who copped their tape and LP releases for Live Adult Entertainment and The Death of Rave between 2012-2023, Christian Love Forum are a peculiar trio of brothers with Greek and Ukrainian heritage, whose syncretic blends of microtonal Arabic, Greek, and Eastern European modes stands far out from the contemporary milieu.
Last spotted debuting their live show at Berlin Atonal 23 to a spellbound crowd, and on a comp for Vereker’s Endangered Species, CLF serve a a furtive but firm handshake with fellow Greek label Heat Crimes on ‘X-Nihilo’, yielding just under an hour of expressive microtonal synth trills, martial machine rhythm and exquisitely opiated atmospheres that ride the finest line between seriousness and evocative aesthetic ambiguity. In other words; right up our dark alley.
As revealed with their Berlin Atonal live show, the trio share and swap roles at will, variously improvising on an unwieldy array of hardware keyboards, rhythm boxes and samplers that congeal in skewed and surprising forms. If we’re not mistaken here, the trio’s affiliate Bootee lends vox to a standout 3-part section of Levantine video nasty soundtrack vibes on ‘Themes for the Golden Jackal’, but the rest is left to the lads to terraform a sprawling yet discrete world unto themselves.
Perceptively skewing Mark Snow via László Hortobágyi in the arabesque opener ‘Hagioscope’, choral chant encounters tortured romance on ‘Love After Love’, whilst ‘Red Nets’ descends into DIY blooz torpor, and the unyielding suspense of ‘Hyper Middle Ages’ suggests a merger of new beat and dabke, ‘Spice Boys’ comes on like a huff of illicit artificial loud after a coupla captagons, and they beautiful beat a retreat into recesses of the imagination with the faded closing couplet ‘Cross County Hate’ into the drone haze of the LP's title cut.
