While most albums of this length would be considered tedious at best, SOTL are arguably the only contemporary composers who can seemingly alter the time-space continuum simply through the playback of their organized sound. They take time itself and stretch, compress and turn it inside out, transforming what would otherwise be an arduous test of nerves into an interlude of half awake dreams that ends too soon.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn this album, SOTL picks up where The Tired Sounds Of… left off with an emphasis on melodic development, moving their epic soundscapes beyond mere drone and subsequently frustrating all the typical ambient cliches associated with their music. Perhaps the best references for this current work would be found in the score to the film \"Le Mepris\" by Georges Delerue, the orchestral works of Zbigniew Preisner, or the 1958 CSO\/ Fritz Reiner recording of Hovhaness’ Mysterious Mountain, specifically the third movement. It was the first time Iʼd sat still for a few years; processed a lot of political anger and emotional garbage. Recorded pretty simply, with a portable 4-track ,Sony stereo mic and an upright piano. When I wasnʼt recording songs I was hiking several miles to the beach. And it is, though \"aggressive\" is a relative term when applied to music that sits upon the brink of consciousness...\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e...It's a wildly overused trope to describe dramatic instrumental music as \"the soundtrack to ________\" (e.g.: a rainy day, a lonely drive, an acid trip, a bear attack)-- the phrase is used to connote a sense of detachment engendered by such music, one that allows us to view our lives as a movie. But in this case, discussing the record's cinematic leanings is justified. Wiltzie has stated the influence of several film composers, and the title of his piece \"La Ballade d'Alain Georges\" namedrops an old French actor. More overtly, this release includes a DVD of videos for several of Wilzie's compositions-- all made by filmmaker Christina Vantzos. Her accompaniment for \"Aegina Airlines\" combines beautifully simple animation with abstract hues, representing the clarity of various musical elements through a literal \"clarity\" of imagistic presentation. Rather than take the Fennesz or Keith Fullerton Whitman approach of mutating and splicing guitar tones, SOTL create reverberant drones through the expert manipulation of attack and decay. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eWiltzie recorded the material for The Dead Texan while in Belgium and deemed it too \"aggressive\" for SOTL. And it is, though \"aggressive\" is a relative term when applied to music that sits upon the brink of consciousness...\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e...It's a wildly overused trope to describe dramatic instrumental music as \"the soundtrack to ________\" (e.g.: a rainy day, a lonely drive, an acid trip, a bear attack)-- the phrase is used to connote a sense of detachment engendered by such music, one that allows us to view our lives as a movie. But in this case, discussing the record's cinematic leanings is justified. Wiltzie has stated the influence of several film composers, and the title of his piece \"La Ballade d'Alain Georges\" namedrops an old French actor. More overtly, this release includes a DVD of videos for several of Wilzie's compositions-- all made by filmmaker Christina Vantzos. Her accompaniment for \"Aegina Airlines\" combines beautifully simple animation with abstract hues, representing the clarity of various musical elements through a literal \"clarity\" of imagistic presentation.
