At first glance the elements may seem familiar, but there is a rare level of sensitivity in the playing and arrangements, a roiling complexity beneath even the most placid passages that occasionally comes to the surface, enveloping the listener.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOpener “Cool temperate” floats along on a placid ten-note sequence, gentle pads and squiggly leads following the changes, gentle washes of gleaming guitar rolling ashore. “I Choose You Too” tunnels downward, with big yawning synths grinding against each-other, glittery metallic shards ricocheting into the heart of the earth before the whole thing explodes with free-time drums and a guitar solo ragged as though it was yanked up through the ground from the mantle before suddenly fading to silence. “Big eternal beautiful” begins with birds and water before synths and guitar enter. Here, Hipwell's guitar feels like a more liquid David Gilmour, with all the ebullient lyricism and carefully placed notes, and as\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e the layers of the nine-and-a-half minute track build, it manages to always carve out a place for itself, picking its spots like a boxer taking jabs. The back half of the tune drops out the guitars and piles on the big pads, yawning upwards as resonant arpeggios tickle your spinal cord. “Pale Reflection” doubles down on overwhelming walls of beautiful and aching synth, in just under three minutes it still manages to knock some dust off my pineal gland as wisps of guitar and filter sweeps float to the ever-opening ground like dead leaves. The (slight return) version swaps the synths for tanpura and pulsing bass, giving the guitar more room to stretch out and fill the corners. Closing track “Moment of perfection,” responsible for nearly half the albums run-time at 22:08, transports the listener to an oceanic scene, gently panning waves wash up on the beach and are mirrored by slowly swelling keys. Voices come in and out, barely audible, and the track ebbs and flows instead of building, closer to Jonah Sharp's most spaced-out work as Spacetime Continuum in its shape than some of its more obvious psychedelic\/kosmiche\/new age-y counterparts. There is an uneasiness somewhere below the surface, the disembodied voices in turns comforting and sinister, the arrangements twisting sour momentarily, big portamento leads over chiming guitars and field recordings bringing to mind the strident synths on THE KLF's Chill Out or Lorenzo Senni's STARGATE. Emergency Group’s Inspection of Cruelty is somewhere on a spectrum refracted through the '70s bands of jazz-rock fusion in general and (despite the lack of horns) Miles Davis’s keyboard-heavy bands in particular, yet coming five decades on from that initial blast of creative innovation, the original musical DNA has been mingled with other styles and developments. There’s perhaps a strain of dub reggae in Dave Mandl’s bass lines, though perhaps their beguiling repetition comes from another source via concurrent evolution. The keyboard parts of Robert Boston don’t specifically sound like anybody who played with Miles, though sort of an amalgam of all of them reduced to its essence and then recast as Hawkwind jams. Tony Williams’s drumming is clearly something Andreas Brade has been influenced by (but then, what drummer hasn’t been influenced by Tony?), and the band’s name obviously nods at Williams’s greatest album as a leader—yet the specifics of how Brade drums is harder and rockier than Williams’s light lines of quicksilver pulse. And Jonathan Byerley’s guitar: the wild card in this comparison, sort of a guitarist acting as one of Miles’s keyboardists (say, Chick Corea) but on guitar and with crunchier riffs and\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e dirtier tones than even Pete Cosey. Add in the multiplicity of related musics that have come since; it’s an ever-flowing river, and even if you stand in that river where Miles and McLaughlin et al. stood, it’s fifty years later and the water’s different, having picked up particles running off from all the weather that’s come since. The result is somewhat like drone in overall mood but jazz-rock in its moment-to-moment kaleidoscopic unfolding, redolent with ancestry but not mere imitation. At moments the result suggests Laraaji as four people playing different instruments in a meditative communion that nonetheless is burlier than “meditative” would suggest if you think of New Age music in connection with meditation when instead you could be pondering the mysteries of universes moving through space with massive power yet lean agility. Emergency Group’s Inspection of Cruelty is somewhere on a spectrum refracted through the '70s bands of jazz-rock fusion in general and (despite the lack of horns) Miles Davis’s keyboard-heavy bands in particular, yet coming five decades on from that initial blast of creative innovation, the original musical DNA has been mingled with other styles and developments. There’s perhaps a strain of dub reggae in Dave Mandl’s bass lines, though perhaps their beguiling repetition comes from another source via concurrent evolution. The keyboard parts of Robert Boston don’t specifically sound like anybody who played with Miles, though sort of an amalgam of all of them reduced to its essence and then recast as Hawkwind jams. Tony Williams’s drumming is clearly something Andreas Brade has been influenced by (but then, what drummer hasn’t been influenced by Tony?), and the band’s name obviously nods at Williams’s greatest album as a leader—yet the specifics of how Brade drums is harder and rockier than Williams’s light lines of quicksilver pulse. And Jonathan Byerley’s guitar: the wild card in this comparison, sort of a guitarist acting as one of Miles’s keyboardists (say, Chick Corea) but on guitar and with crunchier riffs and\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e dirtier tones than even Pete Cosey. Add in the multiplicity of related musics that have come since; it’s an ever-flowing river, and even if you stand in that river where Miles and McLaughlin et al. stood, it’s fifty years later and the water’s different, having picked up particles running off from all the weather that’s come since. The result is somewhat like drone in overall mood but jazz-rock in its moment-to-moment kaleidoscopic unfolding, redolent with ancestry but not mere imitation. At moments the result suggests Laraaji as four people playing different instruments in a meditative communion that nonetheless is burlier than “meditative” would suggest if you think of New Age music in connection with meditation when instead you could be pondering the mysteries of universes moving through space with massive power yet lean agility. Here Dooley assembled a group of eight musicians - trusted friends and collaborators from diverse backgrounds, some of whom had never played together prior to these recordings. With minimal direction given from the composer and bandleader, the group set out to explore these four pieces with dizzying, ecstatic results.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe listener can palpably feel the sense of joy and connection as the band delves deep, locks in, and maps out new territory on Trapped in Purgatory. This is music untethered by the limitations of genre, finding freedom within the loose structures Dooley outlined as the basis for their musical conversation. The pieces are guided by hypnotic, circular bass figures, allowing the rest of the group to explore the cosmos and their newfound synergy. The energy and almost alchemical connection among the large ensemble are on full display throughout. Dooley was studying with Ron Miles at the time of the recording and acknowledges the influence of the late Denver legend in the creative and adventurous spirit of the group\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e improvisation.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe four pieces are each unique and widely varied in tone and texture but there is a clear thread that runs throughout, flowing seamlessly. \"May Flower, Weeping\" opens with twinkling percussion, bass harmonics, and probing horns. Eventually the group locks in on Dooley's repeated bass melody, unfurling layers of warmth and sweetness like petals of a flower. \"Lingering\" hovers gently in the air, suspended by plaintive reeds and modal dobro, tethered to the earth by circular patterns on hammered dulcimer and bass. \"Plainswalking\" dips its toes in the stream of cosmic Americana (where Dooley finds common ground with fellow Island House artists Seawind of Battery and The Modern Folk), with the dobro playing off warm organ, horns, and bass. But soon enough the group travels through a portal of backwards-flowing ambience, before unexpectedly picking up and locking into an almost Allmans-like groove. Closer \"Ütiwaah,\" like the opening \"May Flower, Weeping,\" centers around Dooley’s gentle bass harmonics, this time playing off airy flute and saxophone lines in a more pensive mode. Before long though, the band coalesces around a propulsive bass riff and launches into the atmosphere one more time, held aloft in glockenspiel sparkle and textured keyboards and guitar.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn the end, we are all lucky that the magic that Aaron Dooley and his collaborators summoned that day was caught on tape and we can share in the joy of their musical connection in a time of isolation and disquiet. Dooley said of this music, 'the songs of Trapped In Purgatory are my reminder that a little love and good music can carry you a long way.' Here Dooley assembled a group of eight musicians - trusted friends and collaborators from diverse backgrounds, some of whom had never played together prior to these recordings. With minimal direction given from the composer and bandleader, the group set out to explore these four pieces with dizzying, ecstatic results.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe listener can palpably feel the sense of joy and connection as the band delves deep, locks in, and maps out new territory on Trapped in Purgatory. This is music untethered by the limitations of genre, finding freedom within the loose structures Dooley outlined as the basis for their musical conversation. The pieces are guided by hypnotic, circular bass figures, allowing the rest of the group to explore the cosmos and their newfound synergy. The energy and almost alchemical connection among the large ensemble are on full display throughout. Dooley was studying with Ron Miles at the time of the recording and acknowledges the influence of the late Denver legend in the creative and adventurous spirit of the group\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e improvisation.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe four pieces are each unique and widely varied in tone and texture but there is a clear thread that runs throughout, flowing seamlessly. \"May Flower, Weeping\" opens with twinkling percussion, bass harmonics, and probing horns. Eventually the group locks in on Dooley's repeated bass melody, unfurling layers of warmth and sweetness like petals of a flower. \"Lingering\" hovers gently in the air, suspended by plaintive reeds and modal dobro, tethered to the earth by circular patterns on hammered dulcimer and bass. \"Plainswalking\" dips its toes in the stream of cosmic Americana (where Dooley finds common ground with fellow Island House artists Seawind of Battery and The Modern Folk), with the dobro playing off warm organ, horns, and bass. But soon enough the group travels through a portal of backwards-flowing ambience, before unexpectedly picking up and locking into an almost Allmans-like groove. Closer \"Ütiwaah,\" like the opening \"May Flower, Weeping,\" centers around Dooley’s gentle bass harmonics, this time playing off airy flute and saxophone lines in a more pensive mode. Before long though, the band coalesces around a propulsive bass riff and launches into the atmosphere one more time, held aloft in glockenspiel sparkle and textured keyboards and guitar.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn the end, we are all lucky that the magic that Aaron Dooley and his collaborators summoned that day was caught on tape and we can share in the joy of their musical connection in a time of isolation and disquiet. Dooley said of this music, 'the songs of Trapped In Purgatory are my reminder that a little love and good music can carry you a long way.'
