Horror Vacui, his last record, had marked a nadir: in trying to whittle the musical gesture to its core, he’d inadvertently tapped into some ungodly frequency, reduced to a shadow of a man by the bleakness of his compositions. But, by some curious operation, every time that he took to it, beautiful melodies would slip between his fingers, asserting themselves despite him. In the dream, the quag of thoughts that had been clouding his mind now crystallised. A lit door, d’Hoine walking towards it. No need for Freud: d’Hoine had conjured the dream to resolve the problem. And so the composer began to shy away from the darkness he had previously sought and started looking towards the light.

III
Sol Invictus was to be his own fiat lux, an invocation of the lighter regions of his mind. It was time to cast off the short days, to invite beauty and organic matter into his music. And so he conjured the elements: first wind, which needs air and breath to resonate. Hanne De Backer took to visiting under cover of night, saxophone secreted under her coat. Then Berlinde Deman, with her rare Renaissance serpent. For the record, the trinity united at Vooruit, joined by visual artist Stijn Grupping, who had devised a light installation that responded to sound. I saw them that spring. I know Van Veldhoven a bit longer than Diepenmaat, but by now both of them have released an impressive amount of work. Both artists can be seen as an inventor, tinkering with machines. First, we have Van Diepenmaat with 'Struin', a work for modular synthesizer and two CV controlled turntables, that Diepenmaat made in conjunction with the field kit, a creation from Koma Elektronik. Van Veldhoven has 74 reel-to-reel recorders at home (at least when I visited him some time ago), and creates constructions with these machines, with loops that can also be CV controlled. The results are quite different. Van Diepenmaat's 'Struin' (which means 'wander' in English) opens up with what seems to be the sound of insects or frogs, but quickly you'll learn that these are electronic sounds. There is a pulse also, that goes along with the imitation of animal sounds (or, maybe, these are from a record that Van Diepenmaat is playing at any speed, backwards as well as forwards), but slowly it all moves towards a more electronic field, with occasional sharp tones. The piece has a somewhat improvised feeling and remains open towards the end. On the other side, there is 'Stop' (which is Dutch for 'Stop') by Wouter van Veldhoven, who works with the rhythmic structures by Jean-Claude Risset, which open up here. The music is on a repeat mission, but slowing down over a few minutes, and yet it never gets to a final standstill. At two-third new sound elements are added on rather worn out tape (so says the label), apparently violin and voice, but it is hard to say if it is just that. Van Veldhoven's piece is not as Empty as Diepenmaat but shares a similar 'free' approach to composing or improvising here (there is a thin line, I would say). Comes in a nice riso-printed carton sleeve."

Artist : Jeroen Diepenmaat / Wouter van Veldhoven

Label : Esc.rec.

["contemporary / sound poetry","esc.rec.","monooto","tape
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/st1_49bbcfe5-25c1-4a69-bf9a-ea55de7a537b.jpg?v=1631674794","//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/st2_3ab6f3a7-f9ad-41fb-a54f-5d937c6af715.jpg?v=1631674794
//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/st1_49bbcfe5-25c1-4a69-bf9a-ea55de7a537b.jpg?v=1631674794
Title

Click here to see more Esc.rec. releases available at Tobira.

-------------------------

Edition of 50.

Text by Esc.rec.:

"'Struin' by Jeroen Diepenmaat is made entirely on a modular synthesizer with two self-built CV controlled turntables.

"}

More than 40 musicians were asked to record one or more short fills/phrases. The often fleeting auditory qualities of Rutger Zuydervelt’s latest release, crammed full of percussive divertissements, let us do a multitude of things. We can ignore the record, or pay passing reference to it whilst doing something else. We can quickly process what’s going on (it’s Machinefabriek with lots of contact-book pals, and drums, from other pals), and consume appropriately, in our allotted digital spaces. We can also indulge ourselves and play footsie with it by decodifying the witty titles, or dive fully into the wormhole that is waiting for us and imagine how Zuydervelt created these mad worlds in miniature.

Maybe the protean element of With Drums also has something to do with the incremental, scrapbook nature of its construction. For this is a phenomenal project, with upwards of 40 musicians involved, from his buddies in Dutch alternative and experimental scenes such as René Aquarius from Dead Neanderthals and Leo Fabriek from the Julie Mittens to the likes of Thor Harris, Anja Jacobsen, Greg Saunier, and Tim Branes, who need no further introduction.

Zuydervelt’s own notes on the making of his record reveal both the clinical, surgical nature of making music at one remove and the human impetus to overcome the current imposed social distances. This core duality that drives With Drums luckily allows us to bypass the tropes we have come to associate with any solo lockdown project. Zuydervelt documents where he first saw the collaborators in action, or how he first got in touch with them. He hints at why he wanted to put them together. He edits and reforms their contributions. The notes may seem straightforward (again, you can enter the level you want to read them at), though at some point we see more clearly that this is a structured, even cussed way of creating something out of nothing with virtually everyone Zuydervelt knows. It’s a phenomenal conceit.

And one that reveals the human impulses that drive musicians to make music. If we take the notes for the track ‘TB SC YO - Machinefabriek ft. Tony Buck & Sylvain Chauveau & Yuko Oshima’ we see Zuydervelt giving very different reasons for piecing the elements precisely together whilst creating his aural theatre space. The Necks’ Tony Buck gets a fan-worship pat on the back. Sylvain Chauveau is contacted because Zuydervelt wants “some tuned percussion”. And Yuko Oshima, a name previously not circulating in Machinefabriek’s orbit, is contacted because of a tip-off from a friend. The resultant track, all one minute-something of it, is an almost otherworldly transfer between serene reflection and some tumultuous bursts, akin to the last-gasp spins of a washing machine cycle.

With Drums also often seems to masterfully document musicians’ downtime. That idle second in an afternoon’s soundcheck, trying out a fill whilst half listening to the mixing desk asking for more bass on the toms, or the guitarist wanting to hear more reverb on the monitor. The awful, draining, necessary processes that Georges Simenon, talking of another artistic discipline, called mixing the plaster. It’s a record that puts strange incidental sounds on the map, the uncategorizable elements that live in limbo between being experienced as interesting sounds and defining, or informing some larger piece.

But then, collecting and processing “real” sound worlds from people and places is what Machinefabriek did back in those strange times when we could all actually meet people. Rutger Zuydervelt loved the messy unexplained elements that went with making music. I’ve seen him making holy noise on a big stage with jazz terrorists Dead Neanderthals as part of DNMF and sitting at a table in a community centre, creating the most unobtrusive of soundtracks to Dutch poetry readings. And With Drums shows that collaborations, however painstakingly put together, take on a new guise every time the mic is switched on. A nearly identical line up to the track previously mentioned, ‘TB YO MW - Machinefabriek ft. Tony Buck & Yuko Oshima & Mike Weis’, gives us a very different, very zen passage of sound. Taken collectively and over time, With Drums reveals itself to be a living, organic album with each track - despite being on average around a minute in playing time - revealing new, unexpected shades of meaning. It’s almost like Zuydervelt made a mini puppet theatre with the players as tiny actors.

And this realisation helps the record grow on the listener. There is so much to take on board here, for one we have 24 tracks with enough musicians to play two separate football matches simultaneously. And each track is maddeningly short, and difficult to get to grips with at first go. As such I find With Drums impossible to listen to as a set of individual pieces, preferring to digest it as a whole. After a while an appreciation of the work, and the construction needed, and the hours and hours of listening needed by Machinefabriek, to make it all fit, to make it something that can’t just pass you by, start to imprint themselves on your consciousness.

Their music is electro-acoustic, but with subtle nods to contemporary electronic music that makes them stand out from their peers. On their debut album ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ they present the listener with layers of manipulated improvisational jams that sound like everything and nothing else I’ve heard recently. Which in itself means the album is interesting, but there is more to it than that. If that wasn’t enough, ŌTONN also features Pierre Bastien, E-cor Ensemble, Gianluca Verlingieri, Maria Dybbroe and Torstein Lavik Larsen. Again, this makes the album remarkably interesting indeed.

While listening to ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ I am reminded of an old building not far from where I live. Each time I pass it something is a little different. The local fauna has reclaimed another inch of its hulking shape. Another area that has been targeted in an ongoing game of graffiti tag. Kids have climbed the fence and had a party around it. But at the centre is the building itself. At its core ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ is about disintegration. The disintegration of ideas, speech, culture, and music. Throughout its 36-minutes ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ sounds like its gradually eroding from within. There is pleasure in this. As the album progresses the songs become more and more fractured. At times Remondino’s beats sound like rumble falling from on high. Giordano’s vocals are used more like an instrument than to tell a story. Her vocal range goes from tender whispers to guttural bellows. Underneath all, there are wonky synths and hulking basslines. All of this combined gives the music a unique take on musique concrete. Yes, I know that this isn’t musique concrete, but the backing tracks have that slightly unsettling feeling that you can’t quite explain, or comprehend, but is utterly compelling to listen to.

Throughout ŌTONN ask us to reconsider how we feel about disintegration. Do we enjoy how the music is broken down into just a series of sounds and blips? ‘Sprout’ is a prime example of this. At times it is just the sound of glitching and machines dying. This is a sound we know all too well, but here there is an elegant beauty to the technological death throes.

It makes us question our need for having the newest phone or tablet and what this means to the world we live in. Its poses questions about an isolated society where everything is conveyed through a phone, or screen, instead of face to face and what happens when those devices cease working. Part of this is down to the idea that everything is cyclical. Especially when it comes to music. The pair begin creating improvisations around a tape recorder. Everything was recorded in one take. This gives the songs an immediacy. On a first listen you don’t know what is going to happen, or if what is happening was meant to happen.

The real thrill of ‘Sluimer’ is when Diepenmaat and Sallaerts get locked in to a groove and stay there. The duo appears to be interested in trying things out and sticking with what they like. During ‘Terloops’ there is a wonderfully warming organ that welcomes us to the song. It gives off vibes of late-night roaring fireplaces. Mugs of steaming tea or cold beers. There are also some wonderful melodies deep down in the mix, like pennies in the back of a sofa. They add to the melodic tones of the organ and help ground those pleasant vibes. Behind this feeling of comfort and contentment, there is a repeating clicking noise. At first, it's barely noticeable. As the song progresses it starts to become all-consuming until the organ fades into the warming ether and all your attention is on it. This is what ‘Sluimer’ does incredibly well. It gracefully moves your attention from one sound, or tone, to another.

Without you realising it.

It has been rumoured that Diepenmaat and Sallaerts had been creating music under their own names together for years, but this is the first they have unveiled.
