The album captures the joyful spirit of rural and suburban festivals, where you’ll find food stalls, religious ceremonies, traditional แตรวง, a kind of brass band, and huge, colourful trucks blasting รถแห่ “rod hare” music accompanied by dancers.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOpener Khao Soi, named after the bright orange spicy soup, captures the sensory overload of these celebrations, as well as the dark, distorted current below, a political reality which, by law, cannot be publicly spoken about fully. Like much of the album, the conflicting pressures to stay quiet and to “make a statement” collide into a noisy palimpsest of rod hare, techno and experimental noise.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe uncanny party continues in Gaeng Som, in which complex, springy electronics dance around a speaker-fried luk thung beat. Combining elements of gabber, industrial rythms components and experimental music gleaned from ten years in London's electronic music scene, Hwang also uses traditional Korean instrumentation as part of his compelling, original voice.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe literal and spiritual follow-up to his 2019 EP Non-self, Inner-self examines contemporary life through a Buddhist lens. But where Non-self took delight in the glitchy, dissolution of the self in a digital landscape or on the dance floor of a club, Inner-self looks back towards Korea's past, exploring the echoes of past people and cultures in Seoul's modern landscape.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eHwang's desire to reach into the past is personal. Born in 1935 on the island of Jindo, Kim believed she could cleanse the souls of the recently deceased, as well as their living relatives, through her shamanistic singing and ritual practice she had learned from her mother.
