Text by Will Sol via Aural Canyon:

"The guitar is a seductive instrument; it’s a six-string siren that beckons so many young people to hold it against their body in an intimate embrace, bleed upon its strings, and work tirelessly towards mastering the intricacies of the fretboard. And for some, those who don’t give up, there comes a point in which they are fluent in the language of the guitar, they achieve a certain level of mastery, they can “show off” at parties, they can play confidently on a stage. In developmental terms, they’ve progressed from imitation to mastery, reaching the goal of the novice, to become the expert. For some, that’s the end of the line; they are content.

But there is another breed of guitar player, and they are not satisfied with fretboard fluency, they yearn for the developmental stage beyond mastery, and that is the realm of innovation, of using the guitar to produce novel and unique sounds and patterns, creating songs that are uniquely in the voice and timbre of that player alone.

rootless is one of these restless and forward-pushing players. He is someone who can sit down at any moment and impress with his fingerpicking and fretboard fluency, but that does not satisfy him, he is an innovator; someone who truly embodies the improvisational spirit of always moving forward to something new, something fresh. And for many years he has succeeded in doing this with simply six strings, which is no small feat, it requires vigilance and fortitude to work against muscle memory and decades of habit.

With "to build yourself a temple is to wall yourself inside” we find rootless pushing beyond the confining walls of the six-string temple he has painstakingly built for himself through thousands of hours of fretwork; expanding out into new territory where the atmosphere is still distinctly the sonic realm of rootless, but expressed with a broader palate of voice, synthesizer, and field recordings, which stays true to his voice and spirit, while sharing with us new dimensions and textures that ultimately serve both as accentuations for his always tasteful guitar work and as experimental compositions that can be appreciated on their own. Songs like “there is no why”, “what we make of it” and “ordinary sunday sadness” offer us the meditative American primitive style that rootless so gently and confidently embodies, while “camunian rose” adds cavernous vocals, producing a reverb like backdrop for his exquisite guitar work. Then we have tracks like “god’s breakfast”, “the same place” and “the pagoda in the clearing” that abandon the guitar altogether to produce experimental sound collages that serve as interludes and points of interest along the journey up and down the fretboard, where our guide is someone who not only knows what the guitar can do, but also knows its limits, and has chosen to transcend those limits while still staying true to instrument that has been his companion for so many decades."
