"Nils Quak has been recording and releasing music for over 25 years, as a solo artist and with a range of collaborations and bands. A committed amateur, he can be regarded as part of a scene that Rob Hayler of Radio Free Midwich called the no-audience underground.
On Magnum Opus 2 – his first release for Oxtail recordings – Quak explores the more atonal side of his practice while retaining a sense of focus and patience. Hushed rhythmic snippets flicker in the background like the muffled sound of your neighbour rummaging in his kitchen. Digital drones and chords undulate under blankets of static – strangely comforting radio transmissions from a long closed new age center that now is an artisan Kimchi place.
All recording are based on improvisations with a modular synthesizer."

I often see my music as unnecessary in what is becoming an unavoidably intense world. Other issues demand immediate attention. Family and community care, fighting the injustice of the oppressed, deadly climate disasters and the cost of living as just a few examples. But as my priority turns to address these things I have become aware of the importance of rest and reflection. Both are essential in making actions sustainable and productive. I’d like to think that this album exists to encourage this rest. The last album I made, ‘The Wheel,’ and now ‘Full Stop’ might be misread as ‘Ambient music’. A type of music originally created to pacify shopping mall visitors into a world of comfort as you spend your money. But rather than escape to a world based in idealism, I like to think the songs presented are far more rooted in the in-escapable noise of the world. The feeling of sitting with thoughts and ideas that might not necessarily be enjoyable. A process that I think is important in that it builds strength and is restorative.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe songs in ‘Full Stop’ are a depiction of what happens when you try to stop and take a breath in contemporary society. Everything around does not join your pause, it continues to move in a forceful manner. Mike and I met at DIY experimental gigs, an ongoing friendship that for a long time only existed at various gigs. It grew and we would often have conversations on how our mutual interest in skateboarding led to an obsession with DIY music communities. We talk about the importance of small scale DIY releases where the production often doesn’t exceed 100 units. While the world continues to prioritize expansion, I for one am here for a music community that exists on the ground, on an intimate scale. Low Light is Oxtail label head Mike Nigro’s 8th full-length record, and the sonic signatures of Nigro’s practice are all present: rippling arpeggios, cloud-soft chords, self-schooled sound design in the 00s American noise vernacular, and a tonal sensibility indebted to the 70s kosmische canon. Low Light conjures fresh magic from these familiar touchstones; this is the sound of an artist in tune with their materials and purpose. Grounded music; arranged in the stars.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAt the risk of waxing rhapsodic or ruining the thrill of discovery—I’ll stick to the highlights and leave it to the listener to turn the remaining stones. Curtains open with “No Rush\/Patchwork” as long, slow filters hesitate across the stereo spectrum and gradually clear out the fog. “Sunshowers” features cascading and interlocking snares of melody, latching onto one another and de-coupling just as quickly. The warm center of the record is “Argyle Park Place” where the organic commingles with the artificial–chopped and skewered granular piano draped over a dense chord bed and the environmental evening-songs of NSW. “Hi Viz” wanders into denser, more remote\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e terrain, illuminating a darker path not yet entirely explored and inhabited by FM sprites and gleaming metallic mallets. The sense of place deepens with another highlight “Pray for Rain”. This is composition that plots the geography of its existence, inscribes its boundaries and then, inch by inch, slowly blossoms from within. Rather than advancing on the linear plane–we go out in all directions. Low Light is Oxtail label head Mike Nigro’s 8th full-length record, and the sonic signatures of Nigro’s practice are all present: rippling arpeggios, cloud-soft chords, self-schooled sound design in the 00s American noise vernacular, and a tonal sensibility indebted to the 70s kosmische canon. Low Light conjures fresh magic from these familiar touchstones; this is the sound of an artist in tune with their materials and purpose. Curtains open with “No Rush\/Patchwork” as long, slow filters hesitate across the stereo spectrum and gradually clear out the fog. “Sunshowers” features cascading and interlocking snares of melody, latching onto one another and de-coupling just as quickly. The warm center of the record is “Argyle Park Place” where the organic commingles with the artificial–chopped and skewered granular piano draped over a dense chord bed and the environmental evening-songs of NSW. “Hi Viz” wanders into denser, more remote\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e terrain, illuminating a darker path not yet entirely explored and inhabited by FM sprites and gleaming metallic mallets. The sense of place deepens with another highlight “Pray for Rain”. This is composition that plots the geography of its existence, inscribes its boundaries and then, inch by inch, slowly blossoms from within.
