Bryn Davis // Virginia Bluebells TAPE

本作は、同国実験音楽家Bryn Davisが、2024年7月にリリースしたカセットです。

物音コラージュ・ドローン〜コラージュ・ドローン8曲を収録。DLコード付属。

以下、レーベルによる解説です。

"『Virginia Bluebells』は、Bryn Davisによって "フィールドレコーディング・ミュージック "と表現されている。音源の大半は、オーディオ日記の作成と抽出のプロセスから生まれたものだ。

「私は、平凡な孤独に襲われた時期を処理し、そこから解放される方法を見つけるために、自分の生活から主に抽出した音でこの音楽を作っていた。長い間、自分自身でオリジナルの音楽を作っていなかったので、素材が簡単に流れ始め、大きなプロジェクトとしてまとまり始めたことに自分でも驚いている。」

現代のフィールドレコーディングの精神を受け継いでいることは間違いないが、Brynは集中的な作曲戦略によって、このフォーマットの決まりきった枠を超えている。『I thought I'd take a ride 』は、おもちゃのオルゴールの短い録音から始まり、Brynは空間化されたテクスチャーのあるデジタルコンクレートの作品へと成長させた。『glou glou 』は、パリの舗装工の聴覚的な密度を取り、録音の中心から広がるドローンのようなハーモニクスを抽出する。

『Virginia Bluebells』に内在するのは、他人の世界を聴く感覚であり、Brynの視点を聴覚的に垣間見ることだ。熱心な園芸家であるBrynは、彼らの記録／作曲プロセスと、アルバム名にもなっている開花植物との関係にインスピレーションを受けた。

「春の儚い植物であるVirginia Bluebellsは、季節の初めに、上の樹冠が完全に開く前に見事な色のショーを見せてくれる。その後、残りのシーズンは休眠状態に入り、地上にその存在を示す痕跡はほとんど残らない。しかし、地下では根がエネルギーを蓄えており、次の春を迎えるだけでなく、多くの花を咲かせるために十分なエネルギーを蓄えているのだ。

『Virginia Bluebells』は感動的で精巧に作られた作品集である。バラバラで儚い一瞬の音を、多くの花を咲かせるためのBrynの能力の賜物である。"

Traced Objects:

"Virginia Bluebells is described by Davis as “field recording music”. The majority of the source material comes from a process of creating and extracting an audio diary.

“I was making this music with sounds largely extracted from my life as a way of processing and finding reprieve from a time marked by mundane isolation. I hadn't made original music by myself for a somewhat long period of time so I found myself pleasantly surprised at how easily the material started to flow and come together as a larger project.“

While definitely in the spirit of contemporary field recordings Bryn extends beyond the cliches of the format via focused compositional strategies. “I thought I’d take a ride” begins as short recordings of a toy music box that Bryn grows into a spatialized and textured piece of digital concrète. “glou glou” takes the auditory density of a Paris paving crew and extracts the droning harmonics that spread from within the core of the recordings.

Inherent across Virginia Bluebells is a sense of hearing someone else’s world, an auditory glimpse of Bryn’s point of view. An avid gardener Bryn was inspired by the relationship between their documenting/composing process and the flowering plant for which the album is named.

“As a spring ephemeral, the Virginia Bluebell arrives early in the season with a stunning show of color before the canopy above has fully opened. It then goes dormant for the remainder of the season leaving little trace of its presence above ground. But underground its roots are storing energy and with the hope that there will be enough in the tank to not only make it to the next spring, but to also yield many blooms.“

Virginia Bluebells is a moving and finely crafted collection of work. The result of Bryn’s ability to take disparate and fleeting moments of sound to yield many blooms."
