But always with a strong focus on details, on the grains of what eventually becomes a solid entity, a resonant construction. Precise sound design and elastic rhythms are key, whether it’s in his solo work or in collaborations. In the past he has worked with Peter Van Hoesen as Sendai, and more recently he started Grid Ravage, a trio with Louis Evrard on drums and Gino Coomans on cello.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eSince 2009, De Mey had a string of releases on a wide range of labels. Line, Sandwell District, Opal Tapes, Spectrum Spools, Editions Mego, Latency, Entr’acte, Stellage, Superpang, his own Bandcamp (obviously)… an ever-growing list of outlets allowing for a broad palette of styles and moods. There’s also been a vast amount of live shows at respected festivals and venues; CTM, Atonal, Labyrinth, Mutek,… to name but a few.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring office hours, De Mey works as a sound designer, sound editor and re-recording mixer. No one really knew anything about him for sure, except that he was always talking about writing down his life story to be made into a movie, leaving the criminal life and moving to California. All that he really had was the soundtrack to the movie though. He had made it all by himself on a 4-track tape recorder and swore it was \"the heart of the movie\" and \"ahead of its time\". Apparently, he eventually had to skip town and disappear for good when things went south - rumor has it he’s now a surf instructor in Costa Rica. Captivated heads nodding. Closed eyes. Followed by wild dancing. Screams. Spontaneous freestyle battle raps. Thrown chairs. Crying, shared kisses and hugs. A boxing legend named \"Silverfist\" Lemaire who had always dreamt of making it big as a Hollywood movie producer. No one really knew anything about him for sure, except that he was always talking about writing down his life story to be made into a movie, leaving the criminal life and moving to California. All that he really had was the soundtrack to the movie though. He had made it all by himself on a 4-track tape recorder and swore it was \"the heart of the movie\" and \"ahead of its time\". Apparently, he eventually had to skip town and disappear for good when things went south - rumor has it he’s now a surf instructor in Costa Rica. The box in the trunk of the Mercedes he had to sell to get out, is what's left of his dream.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhat has found its way to us is a captivating musical journey into a world that never came to be. This is the sound of two of Chicago’s most vibrant instrumental voices listening deeply, communing in sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eRecorded in Laurenzi’s attic studio, Devotional Fade emerged from a series of weekly sessions over the course of a single month. The duo kept the tape rolling continuously each day and selected a number of immersive sonic worlds to present, oscillating between patient, sacred minimalism and wild, dancefloor-worthy combustion.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe pair set two parameters to heighten the sessions’ stakes: editing would be kept to a minimum, and a rule of “no pitched overdubs” was put in place – ensuring that all melodic and harmonic gestures would have to be committed in real time. Laurenzi and Gold held true, only sparingly adding a stray shaker or brush to these already largely complete improvisations. Laurenzi and Gold, key collaborators in the Chicago creative scene and with genre spanning artists such as Bill Callahan and Makaya McCraven, step forward here with a major artistic statement, a product of extended improv sessions capturing the duo’s hypnotic interplay. This is the sound of two of Chicago’s most vibrant instrumental voices listening deeply, communing in sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eRecorded in Laurenzi’s attic studio, Devotional Fade emerged from a series of weekly sessions over the course of a single month. The duo kept the tape rolling continuously each day and selected a number of immersive sonic worlds to present, oscillating between patient, sacred minimalism and wild, dancefloor-worthy combustion.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe pair set two parameters to heighten the sessions’ stakes: editing would be kept to a minimum, and a rule of “no pitched overdubs” was put in place – ensuring that all melodic and harmonic gestures would have to be committed in real time.
