"Written and recorded over the course of a year, ‘The Ancient Place’ is Sunspire’s second LP. Produced using limited equipment at the artist’s home, the record reflects a widening palette of sounds and influences while staying true to the nostalgic dream-pop style of previous releases. From the joyful romanticism of ‘Sunlight’ and ‘Nothing Else’ to the solemn reflection of ‘Just Enjoy The View,’ the album explores feelings of both hope and desperation at points. The record is heavily inspired by the hills and forests of the artist’s home, and is steeped in wonder at the natural world, evoking its mystery and beauty with vivid, poetic lyrics
The album begins with ‘The Woods,’ one of its more experimental cuts. A powerful opening, the track layers the artist’s signature washed-out vocals with harsh granular textures and soaring synthesised strings in a bold and evocative combination. The rest of the record features varying production styles, flitting between synthesised sounds and dreamy guitar-based melodies with ease. Sunspire’s signature home-recorded sound is here as ever, suffusing the album with nostalgic warmth. Present too are his vocals, floating in and out of the dreamlike wash below.
‘The Ancient Place’ closes with ‘Serpentine’. Haunting and bittersweet, it captures the tone of the album as a whole, with lilting pianos and melancholy ambience permeating the track. ‘Serpentine,’ while pensive, is ultimately uplifting, a final breath of hopeful romanticism and mysterious beauty as the album comes to a close.
‘And just before the pavement turns to gold… I feel like myself again’
Recording with limited equipment at home, Sunspire is the alias of Jack Jazrawy-Brown, a Wiltshire based songwriter and producer. Taking cues from both dream pop and contemporary indie rock, Jack began teaching himself the art of recording while still at school, refining his haunting melodies and bittersweet lyrics over the years since.
'The Ancient Place' is Sunspire's second LP. Heavily inspired by the hills and forests of his home, the record is steeped in wonder at the natural world, evoking its mystery and beauty with vivid, poetic lyrics. Darting between hopeful romanticism and gentle melancholy, the album features the artist's signature home-recorded warmth, offering listeners both dreamlike melodies and driving sequenced drums.
