"The Aurora's Promise (a lost letter from an unknown)

I've never left Japan.
I've never been on a plane, never seen the ocean from the other side. My whole life has been here, in this tiny village tucked away in the mountains of Hokkaidō, where winter arrives in silence and leaves only when it chooses to.

And yet, that night, the sky gave me a gift I thought impossible.
I had always read that the aurora borealis could only be seen in faraway places — Norway, Iceland, in dreams I never really dared to dream.
But you once told me, "The sky has no borders. Maybe one day, it will dance above us too."

I laughed then, thinking it was just your romantic way of comforting me.
And then, you left.
And I stayed here, with the hum of the wood stove and your last message, unread.

That January night, I stepped outside as always to throw hot water on the snow. But I stopped.
The sky… was trembling.
Green. Blue. Hints of violet.
A ribbon of light slipping through the stars, silent, as if searching for something.
Or someone.

I thought of you.
Of those words.
And for a moment, I believed the aurora was truly a promise. Yours.
As if the sky had carried me your embrace, from thousands of kilometers away.

I smiled.
And I cried.
Because in that moment, I wasn't alone anymore.
And maybe… I never really was."
