"LINEは、MARK FELLの新作ソロ作品『Ten Types of Elsewhere』を発表できることを誇りに思う。トポロジーとは、可能な空間や空間的対象（曲線、曲面、結び目、多様体、位相空間、対称群など）を扱う数学の一分野である。本作は、空間的・時間的な変形、ねじれ、回転、反射、伸長を通じて、対象と他者との関連性を探求している。ここでは空間と物体は自明で単一ではなく、多重で不規則、異常な存在として描かれる。

本作は、公共空間でのインスタレーション、ギャラリー作品、大型作品、小型作品など、近年の制作活動を記録する試みとして始まった。この活動から生じた問題に刺激を受け、記録を用いてこれらを文書化する代わりに、10のプロセスが生まれた。それぞれが空間や作品と異なる形で関わる——記録、作品を稼働させるシステム、パターン、方法や技法、作業の仕方、名称、あるいは作品外の参照点などである。これはMARK FELLの米国における初のフルレングス・ソロ作品であり、LINEにとって刺激的な新たな出発点である。"

"LINE is proud to announce the new solo release by Mark Fell, Ten Types of Elsewhere. Topology is a branch of mathematics concerning possible spaces and spatial objects – curves, surfaces, knots, manifolds, phase spaces, symmetrical groups, etc. The work explores a link between objects and alterity through spatial and temporal deformations, twistings, rotatings, reflections and stretchings. Here spaces and objects are not self-evident and singular, but multiple, irregular, anomalous.

The work began as a documentation of recent installations some in public spaces, some gallery works, some large works, some small etc. Inspired by the problems brought up by this activity, instead of using recordings to document these, ten processes came about each of which relates to the spaces and works in a different way – a recording, or system used to run the work, a pattern, a method or technique, a way of working, a name, or a reference point outside the work. This is Mark Fell’s first solo full length release in the United States and is a exciting new departure for LINE."

Amazed, the two artists unearthed the origin of these writings.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt is said that Basalt (1910 - ?) was a gender non-conforming person born and raised in Berlin. They studied geology while being part of the city's vibrant queer scene before escaping the Nazi regime in the 1930s. For years, they travelled through Europe until they settled in the Onsernone Valley in the 1950s. Here, Basalt developed a keen ear and relationship to the environment informed by early theories of bioacoustics, psychoacoustics, and ecology. Oozing with poetry, Basalt’s notes revealed a hypothesis of their own emerging from a singular methodology of listening. The core principle of\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e their “sonic imprint theory” was the belief that sound leaves measurable traces in the matter it comes into contact with. Consequently, Basalt spent the rest of their life using their body as a sound recording device in the hopes of creating a sonic archive through their skeleton. In time, they cultivated an intimate and extensive relationship with rocks, birds, rivers, insects, and human locals—such as fellow trans refugee and poet Gian Alessandro Rapp. In the end, nobody knows exactly what happened to Basalt. It is believed that they disappeared in the Onsernone Valley, their body never to be found. Voices coaxed from stones, shells, driftwood, bones, sand, and kelp are entangled with wild soundscapes such as lapping waves, sea ice snaps, howling winds, and squeals from a frozen pond. This sonic synthesis hints at the myriad ways Arctic lifeforms and natural systems interconnect. The composer also brings her music into conversation with the rocky history of human enterprises in the Arctic by including sounds from saw blades, pyrex beakers, remnants of forsaken mining operations, and the ship she sailed on in Svalbard.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn the opening track, “moffen”, Leonard calls forth the playful spirit of juvenile walruses with the help of master saxophonist Phillip Greenlief, who performs on kelpinet, a tubular piece of dried bullwhip kelp with a saxophone mouthpiece attached to one end. This frolicking composition invites audiences to marvel at the wide range of sounds walruses produce, and to share the artist’s concern about the future of this extraordinary species. “glugge\", a response to increasing industrialization in the Arctic Ocean, developed from recordings Leonard made via the porthole in her schooner cabin. Lilting ostinatos generated by the ship’s propeller build into a gasping elegy for the Arctic icecap and the ecosystems it supports. Ensconced in pulsing tones from bowed glass, “thresholds” peers through the window of a home in Upernavik, Greenland into a tempestuous Arctic storm, contemplating tensions between domestic and wild, human and more-than-human. In the slowly-evolving “mørketid”, which grew out of an improvisation on metal handrails in the ghost town of Pyramiden, Leonard wonders what it would be like to spend polar night in a Soviet coal mining settlement. I used these to create audio collages with different combinations of sounds, and ended up with about 5 hours worth of stuff.
