"Recorded between 2014 and 2018, Today is Horrible chronicles the sonic elements from six different performance pieces written and performed by Woods during that time. Although these recordings rely on Woods’ usual palette of sounds (sine waves, crumbling static, obscured text, stretches of silence, etc), TiH reorganizes those elements into a powerful and haunting collection of deceptively straightforward compositions that only reveal themselves after multiple listens. The album touches on a number of different socially charged themes, ranging from the failure of political change within unwavering social paradigms to the construction of whiteness within media, that remain connected through an unwavering critical stance towards the modern social condition. However, these notions remain submerged under crushing walls of distortion, heavy synth drones, and barely whispered vocals, only coalescing for those with the patience to revisit the work on multiple occasions."

A love song about a particular person’s break up holds close to no appeal beyond the songwriter themself, but a song about break ups suddenly speaks to everyone who has ever had their heart broken (which is almost everyone). In this sense, a song about nothing suddenly becomes a song about anything for anyone.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo a certain extent, Wittmer pulls the same sleight of hand on “I Believe” but changes one key detail: he doesn’t strip the album of its individual signifers but instead buries them under layers of mystery. My training as a visual artist also leads me to go through mental images (such as a steep landscape, a boiling organism, an organic matter) which will then find a sound form, states that I would describe as syncope, sound effluvia, abrasive arrhythmias. Inaudible super-bass frequencies pumping through a room filled with acoustic instruments and electric guitars set to quaver and rumble sympathetically. Then record the result; a cacophony of resounding snares, harmonizing drones and the subtle rattle of shakers, bells and tambourines. Most of the time you can't hear the bass, just the reactions to it. Sometimes the bass didn't create any rattle at all. By passing the source sounds through amplifiers at their original frequencies and mixing them with their reactive acoustic counterparts, each moment assumes its own physical logic, a sense of movement and consequence, accidentally adhering to Newton's third law of motion: for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe intention behind this project was to create an album that, despite undergoing extensive manipulation, emanates a sense of human warmth and soul. All the source sounds were recorded live or processed through reamplification and manipulated live in a studio setting before being edited at home. The recording sessions took place during spring, summer, winter, and fall, capturing a\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e broad spectrum of moods without deliberately seeking catharsis. The aim was to remain emotionally open and avoid excessive direction, in a superstitious attempt to capture something of the human condition writ large. Rather than pursuing personal emotional release, the goal was to embrace the human experience more generally and avoid individual emotional states. The logic is that creating music that resonates with universal feelings and sentiments is more challenging than producing work that is solely introspective and self-referential.
