Text by Stones Throw:

"Musical collaborators and life partners Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack are Pearl & The Oysters. Their Stones Throw debut Coast 2 Coast, an album that documents their move from Florida to L.A., releases April 21st.

“Paraiso” reimagines idyllic 20th-century Californian tourism ads and dreams of a time “when the idea of the ‘endless summer’ was more of a luxury commodity than a looming menace.”

Juliette (Pearl) and Joachim (The Oysters) met at high school in Paris and formed an immediate bond through their mutual love of music and pop culture, spanning everything from ‘70s jazz to ‘90s space age pop. Their eclectic tastes followed them through a move across the Atlantic to Gainesville, Florida in 2015 where they tapped into the local DIY scene, and then to Los Angeles In 2020. But wherever the couple traveled, they found a sense of home in one another.

They say: “In January 2020, we settled in L.A. full of hope for the future of the band. ‘Pacific Ave’ was a cryptic attempt to allude to our first steps in this new environment being a little alienating, as we were discovering a megalopolis turned ghost town. Because we were physically confined, it really felt like the only avenue to escape was a mental one. For us, it meant a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing about L.A. itself or what it could represent.”

Coast 2 Coast draws on Juliette and Joachim’s time spent in Paris, the swamps of Florida, sunny Southern California and beyond. “Konami” ( “small wave” in Japanese) was influenced by Juliette’s white noise machine and its “surf” setting: “Somehow the beat reminded us of the kind of music associated with 90s jet ski arcade games like Wave Shark.”

For Coast 2 Coast, Juliette and Joachim brought on a host of collaborators – Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Caroline Rose, La Luz), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Dent May, and Mild High Club’s Alex Brettin. Having sat in on her jazz musician father’s rehearsals as a kid, now Juliette invited him to play vibraphone on the album."
