Inner Space Travel:
"Ambient music and sleep obviously go hand in hand and the subject has been wildly covered. Still, it was great to get a submission from The Last Ambient Hero, with a description that surely appealed to my “recovering insomniac self” so much that I had to show interest even before listening.
In his own words: “It's based on the 5 stages of sleep with each stage encoded with frequencies that complement the brain's natural state in each phase of sleep. All pitches, delay times and tempos have been carefully calculated to also sit within the corresponding brainwave ranges. In addition, the length of each stage mirrors the average amount of time we spend in each stage of sleep during an average 90 min sleep cycle.”
After such a gamble, it was a pleasure to be taken through the gentleness and warmth of the sounds in “Sleep Cycle”. The classic evolving pads and atmospheres provide a cosy bed on which sprinkles of higher pitched melodies provide just enough movement for the brain to process. I particularly enjoy the clear journey through the different stages as we move through each cycle, with the tonality slowly drifting deeper and deeper, finally reaching that glorious moment of REM sleep.
Even though I feel like this album is more inspired by sleep cycles than exactly an album to help or accompany you to sleep, I did road test it myself and it certainly works. It’s one of those albums that might take a few plays to get through to the end, which in this case, is definitely no bad thing! "
