Still utilizing his traditional instruments (piano, acoustic guitar, cavaquinho, viola caipira), Klinke began recording a series of minimal improvisations onto magnetic tape (both reel-to-reel and cassette) in late 2020. The sounds of the artist's home surroundings (birds outside the window, his children playing) seep continuously into the mix, as well as field recordings taken in his travels in Canada and Brazil. The interplay between musical and environmental sounds result in evocative pieces that connect distinct, but familiar soundscapes, filtered through the fuzzy characteristics of analog tape. One might say the primary instrument of this new approach is the tape recorder itself, so infused into the final results are the telltale signs of the medium. The title, 'First Sounds', refers both to his children's first perceptions of the world, and to this first offering of music under the name Playback Head, made in the spirit of curiosity, open-mindedness, and experimentation.

On 'Harbour of the North Wind' he introduces a collection of sprightly electronic tone poems to the Hotham Sound library; equal parts ambient music, synth pop, and Berlin School minimalism. While Richer describes it as ‘music from an alternate world,’ there is something distinctly Maritimes sounding about this album, calling to mind the isolated coastal communities of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The microscopic bleeps and boops of 'Reef Analysis' and 'Myst Fortahn Probes' inch their way forward like lichen spreading over windswept rocks, while the sequenced rhythms of 'Falcon Maze' and 'Tidal Denouement' shine and shimmer like cabin lights on the shore. Album standout 'Charismatic Catastrophe' sees Richer slipping into a more languid mode, with stately arpeggios making way for a series of beautiful string arrangements that evoke warmth and home. Focusing exclusively on the most obscure of Intelligent Music’s software creations - UpBeat: The Intelligent Rhythm Sequencer, released in 1987. Hailed by reviewers of the time as ‘the world’s best drum machine,’ UpBeat allowed MIDI compatible hardware to be saved as preset devices that could then be called up as individual tracks in its software interface. What made it truly unique however was its ability to send looping MIDI patterns to drum machines that could then play the loops in perpetuity while the user made real time adjustments on the fly. While common in today’s digital audio workstations, this was a true novelty at the time of UpBeat’s release. In addition to this, the program also offered intelligent control over each individual drum sound, allowing users to make algorithmic changes in note density, timing, articulation, and velocity. But as anyone who’s followed his recent releases on Pacific Rhythm and MM Discos can attest, there’s another CORBEN; a late night purveyor of old-school electro and Italo disco who’s more inclined to make heads nod and bodies move. ‘Transmitter’ is a pirate radio signal beamed straight out of this alternate zone; a kaleidoscopic jumble of homemade beats and sampled media that harkens all the way back to ‘Paul’s Boutique’ in its disorientating, collage-like density. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd like that early masterpiece of sampling, 'Transmitter' starts us off in a deceptively languid mood. ‘Non-Duality’ creeps into view with molasses-like bass tones oozing slowly down the surface of a darkened wall of disembodied voices and stuttering synths. It's a hypnotic opener, but just as we’re acclimatizing ourselves to its luxurious pace, the album starts to move. A swarm of Ligeti-like voices bursts into song atop a brutally simple pattern of hi-hat, kick \u0026amp; snare on ‘Junk’s Rocking’; a miniature masterclass in immediacy that acts as a promise of things to come. ‘Carousel of\u003cspan style=\"display: inline;\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Fantasies’ brings more voices into the fray while doubling down on the beats, and by the time we’ve reached its halfway point, it’s obvious ‘Transmitter’ is meant to be listened to loud. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNowhere is this more apparent than on the one-two punch of ‘Routes of Swallows’ and ‘To Question Oracles,’ the first of which is a stadium sized drum workout that sounds larger than anything CORBEN’s ever done, and the second an impossibly wide panorama of northwest nature worship, complete with swooning birds, crashing waves, babbling children, and even the voice of Paul Spong, BC’s legendary neuroscientist and Orca researcher. Spong isn’t the only piece of canadiana to be heard on ‘Transmitter.’ NFB heads will instantly recognize the voice of Project Grizzly’s Troy Hurtubise, as well as a host of vintage tones from the CBC. But as anyone who’s followed his recent releases on Pacific Rhythm and MM Discos can attest, there’s another CORBEN; a late night purveyor of old-school electro and Italo disco who’s more inclined to make heads nod and bodies move. ‘Transmitter’ is a pirate radio signal beamed straight out of this alternate zone; a kaleidoscopic jumble of homemade beats and sampled media that harkens all the way back to ‘Paul’s Boutique’ in its disorientating, collage-like density. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd like that early masterpiece of sampling, 'Transmitter' starts us off in a deceptively languid mood. ‘Non-Duality’ creeps into view with molasses-like bass tones oozing slowly down the surface of a darkened wall of disembodied voices and stuttering synths. It's a hypnotic opener, but just as we’re acclimatizing ourselves to its luxurious pace, the album starts to move. A swarm of Ligeti-like voices bursts into song atop a brutally simple pattern of hi-hat, kick \u0026amp; snare on ‘Junk’s Rocking’; a miniature masterclass in immediacy that acts as a promise of things to come. ‘Carousel of\u003cspan style=\"display: inline;\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Fantasies’ brings more voices into the fray while doubling down on the beats, and by the time we’ve reached its halfway point, it’s obvious ‘Transmitter’ is meant to be listened to loud. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNowhere is this more apparent than on the one-two punch of ‘Routes of Swallows’ and ‘To Question Oracles,’ the first of which is a stadium sized drum workout that sounds larger than anything CORBEN’s ever done, and the second an impossibly wide panorama of northwest nature worship, complete with swooning birds, crashing waves, babbling children, and even the voice of Paul Spong, BC’s legendary neuroscientist and Orca researcher. Spong isn’t the only piece of canadiana to be heard on ‘Transmitter.’ NFB heads will instantly recognize the voice of Project Grizzly’s Troy Hurtubise, as well as a host of vintage tones from the CBC.
