アメリカ・フィラデルフィアの実験ポップデュオdraag meが、2023年8月に同国LAのレフトフィールド・ダンスレーベルDoom Tripからリリースしたレコードです。

目まぐるしく展開しますが、不思議とキャッチーな実験エレクトロニック・ポップ〜グリッチ・ヒップホップ15曲を収録。

以下、レーベルによる解説です。

"フィラデルフィアを拠点に活動するdraag meは、アフターアワーのインターネット・ワームホールや夜のバス移動のための音楽だ。目は充血し、窓の外の街は雨に濡れてグレースケール。これらすべては、サンプルのループ、ディストーションのしなやかな波、鍵盤やギターによる共鳴の瞬間を通して語られる。これが、2020年の "I am gambling with my life "に続く、draag meの2枚目（そしてウィクリンとの初共演作）である "Lord of the shithouse "の美的テロワールである。

"Lord of the shithouse "は、パンデミックの最中に実現した。家に閉じこもっていたシュワルツとウィクリンは、曲のアイデアをメールで送り合った。そして1年の間に、ファイル共有が完全に実現した楽曲に変わった。スピリットの画期的なレコード『ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH』のカッティング・ルーム・フロアに残された曲は、再編成され、より奇妙なものになり、その過程でdraag meの世界に入れられた。しかし間違いではない。draag meはbeehiveのサイド・プロジェクトではなく、独自の渦の中に存在するプロジェクトなのだ。サイケデリック・ポップ、インダストリアル・ミュージック、R&B、そしてエレクトロニック。ここにラベルは必要ない： 「lord of the shithouse "はジャンルにとらわれないレコードであり、その実験的な傾向の中に真の透明感がある。

オープニングの「like a nuisance」は、中学校の駐車場でコカインとメントスを飲んでいるようだ。フックから外された古い回転電話のブザー。シンセとパーカッションがストリングスの喧騒にぶつかる。そして中盤、ラッパーのCRASHprezが登場し、自由に連想する。「Smile it's all recorded"、"I'm lost like all importance/it's all performance "とラップする。彼のバースは、このアルバムに収録されている4人のフィーチャリングのうちの1つである。シュワルツとウィルシュリンは、この4人のアーティストに即興の機会を与え、曲の空間の中で彼ら自身のアートを作ることを望んだ。"blade in view "では、同じフィラデルフィアを拠点とする実験的変人、Body Meatをフィーチャーしている。この曲はウージーで、薬漬けのようなペースで進んでいく。

"death cult "も同様に、外を歩いていて周りの木々が浮いているように感じたり、太陽が今にも真昼の日食に突入しそうな、そんなウキウキ感を強調している。"nightclub "は、アルゴリズムでキュレーションされたYouTubeの穴の中で朝の4時まで起きていることで終わる、クソみたいな一日の後の悪い雰囲気だ。Lord of the shithouseの多くはこのようなものだ。漠然としていることに興味があり、感情をとらえ、それを死んだ虫のように厚紙に貼り付けることに興味がある。レコードの40分間に物語を求めるのではなく、抽象の中に存在するエネルギーを探してほしい。このエネルギーは、高度に管理され、労を惜しまず、コントロールされている。"

Doom Trip:

"Philly-based draag me, the project of Spirit of the Beehive’s Zack Schwartz and Corey Wichlin, is music for after hours internet wormholes, bus rides at night. Your eyes are bloodshot, the city from outside your window is grayscale, wet with rain. All of this is told through heady loops of samples, sinuous waves of distortion, the occasional moment of resonance by way of a keys or guitar. This is the kind of aesthetic terroir of "lord of the shithouse," draag me’s second record (and the first with Wichlin), the follow up to 2020’s "i am gambling with my life."

"lord of the shithouse" materialized during the pandemic. Schwartz and Wichlin, both stuck at home, sent emails to each other with ideas for songs. And over the course of a year, file sharing turned into fully realized tracks. Songs left on the cutting room floor of Spirit’s landmark record "ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH", got rejiggered, made stranger, and put into the draag me universe along the way. But make no mistake — draag me isn’t a Spirit of the Beehive side project, it is a project that exists in a swirl of its own. The songs on this record are far more knotty, circling the drain of psychedelic pop, industrial music, r&b, and electronic. There’s no need for labels here: "lord of the shithouse" is a record free of genre, and in its penchant for experimentation there is a real sense of clarity.

Opener “like a nuisance,” is like coke and mentos in the middle school parking lot. A buzz of an old rotary phone, yanked off the hook. Synths and percussion crash into a strident flourish of strings. And at the halfway point, the rapper CRASHprez comes in, free associating. “Smile it’s all recorded,” he raps, “I’m lost like all importance/it’s all performance.” His verse is one of four features on the record. Each of these four artists wrote their own lyrics, Schwartz and Wilchlin wanted to give these artists the chance to improvise, to make their own art within the space of the song. “blade in view,” features Body Meat, a fellow Philly-based experimental weirdo. The song is woozy, moving at a drugged-out pace.

“death cult,” similarly underscores that wooziness, of walking around outside and feeling like the trees around you are floating, that the sun could burst into a midday eclipse at any moment. “nightclub,” is a comedown, a bad vibe after a shitty day that ends with staying up until four in the morning inside of an algorithm-curated YouTube hole. Much of "lord of the shithouse" is like this: interested in being nebulous, at capturing a feeling and pining it to a piece of cardboard like a dead bug. Don’t look for a narrative over the record’s forty minutes, look for these energies that exist within abstraction. And these energies are highly curated, labored over, controlled. "
