An ethos can come from vision, accident, or just enough small decisions repeated until they start to look deliberate. Who knows.

What I do know is this: I can bet a beer I’ll recognize an Artsy Records release instantly - already more than can be said for most labels today. As Alexander Stubb likes to structure things in three points, I’ll do the same: Artsy Records is wonky, funny, and sincerely outward-looking in a way that feels genuinely radical.

It has never felt like a closed scene documenting itself. The artists sound curious - reaching inward and outward geographically, aesthetically, emotionally. Radical not through grim faces and manifestos, but through openness: a refusal to shrink the world into a tribe.

That spirit is especially clear on this sprawling 30-track compilation. Most artists have passed through the label’s orbit - Tomutonttu, Kraus, Mik Quantius, Piia Rinne, Bromp Treb and others - gathered by curator Arttu Partinen (of Avarus and Mental Alaska). His compass seems less genre than instinct. What you get isn’t a roster showcase but a temporary community assembled in digital files and carefully sequenced.

Listening feels a bit like Soulseeking a whole label catalogue: sketches next to fully formed pieces, noise dissolving into ambient drift, abstraction tipping into crooked melody, seriousness interrupted by strange joy. The sequencing trusts curiosity more than narrative.

And maybe that’s the real through-line of both this scene, Artsy Records and Arttu: not sonic consistency, but attitudinal consistency. Exploratory without snobbery. Personal without isolation. Humorous without losing seriousness.

And that small jolt of recognition - ah, this strange and beautiful way of seeing things again - might be the closest thing an underground label gets to greatness."
