Full Spectrum returns with one final edition before we open up our windows and welcome spring. Grey & Gold is the debut release from Philadelphia-based producer and synthesist Phil Yeah, who has graced us with a pair of fittingly liminal zoners that simply ooze patience, focus, and intent – a stately soundtrack for the coming thaw.

Recorded in the autumn of 2020 in Phil’s West Philadelphia home studio, Grey & Gold is essentially the product of a year in isolation. Following months of social unrest throughout the city and a summer of nothing due to the ongoing global pandemic, Phil began looking for new ways to safely engage with the city that he calls home and perhaps save a shred or two of his sanity.

Despite having no previous experience with the sport, he secured a portable kayak and began paddling the Schuylkill River at night. A risky pastime, to be sure, but one that afforded him a whole new appreciation for Philadelphia’s rich local ecosystem. During the day, Phil would often escape to the city’s numerous parks and outdoor spaces. Bartram’s Garden, a historic arboretum near his home, was a particular favorite.

The two side-long compositions that comprise Grey & Gold present a sonic portrait of those experiences, suffused as they are with sounds captured in the City of Brotherly Love’s obscure nooks and crannies. The rest of it is the result of Phil’s ongoing obsession with dub mixing techniques, modular synthesis, and process-based composition. Taken together, these works evoke rich autumnal hues and sodium lamps glinting off the river’s oily surface in equal measure.
