『Bill Nace Plays the 2 String Taishogoto』は、私にとって、暗黒時代に向けて灯された松明のようであり、あるいはむしろ、自らを焼き尽くすような犠牲の儀式のように感じられる一枚だ。Naceは、メディア、人々、場所、ドローイング、音、映像、楽器といったあらゆる領域にまたがる創造的な作品群を持つ、アメリカのアンダーグラウンドシーンにおける唯一無二の存在である。私は幸運にも、30年もの間彼を親しい友人と呼べる間柄にある。Billの演奏には独特で言葉では言い表しにくい何かがあるが、私はそれが様々な場面で現れるのを目にしてきた。Billが演奏を始めると、人々は足を止めて耳を傾ける。何か並外れたことが起きているという認識が生まれるのだ。それはギターやバンド、バーという表層を突き破り、目覚めの合図として響き渡る。

本作では、Billのソロ演奏での2つの輝かしい側面――それぞれが独自の質を備えた――を堪能できる。A面では炎が軽やかに燃え上がる。螺旋状にループする音が土台となり、金属的で深く心地よい声が様々な形をとりながらうめき、嘆き叫ぶ。Billは、長年にわたるアンプや音響システムの故障からしか得られない熟練の技で、風の馬に乗っている。フィードバックは溢れ出そうと絶えず脅かすが、そのたびに新たな表現を見出す。2本の弦から、表情、色彩、形が美しく、あらゆるバリエーションで浮かび上がる。大音量で聴けば、家の窓が割れてしまうかもしれない。

B面ではその形式がひっくり返される。一連の音符が繰り返されるが、それは単なるループではない。血が鼓動し、筋肉が痙攣し、身体が動きながらこれらの音を生成している。最初は、その形式にシンプルさと緊張感がある。しかし、私の脳は次第にその音に溶け込み、広がる空間は広大だ。倍音やハーモニクスが広い部屋の壁に反響し、私の時間感覚は変容する。ここでも、2本の弦が奏でる音域は果てしなく美しく広がる。2本の弦、2つの面、異なるけれど互いに繋がっている。Bill本人と同じように、私はこの音楽が存在し、それを目の当たりにできることに感謝している。ぜひ、あなた自身で聴いて確かめてみてほしい。"

"'Bill Nace Plays the 2 String Taishogoto' is a record that feels to me like a torch set on fire for the dark ages, or maybe more like an immolation. Nace is a singular figure of the American underground with a catalogue of creative output that stretches across mediums, people, places, drawings, sounds, images, instruments. I’ve been lucky enough to call him a close friend for 3 decades now. There’s a quality to Bill’s playing that’s unique and hard to put words to, but I’ve seen it show up in many different settings. When Bill plays people stop and listen up. There’s recognition that something extraordinary is happening. It breaks through the surface of guitars, bands, and bars as a wake-up call. 

In this case we’re treated to 2 glorious sides of the solo version of Bill, each with its own quality. The flame is light on side A. A spirally loop sets the ground as a metallic and deeply pleasurable voice moans and wails through different forms. Bill rides the wind horse with expertise that can only come from years of broken amps and sound systems. The feedback continuously threatening to spill over only to find a new expression. A full range of faces, colors, and shapes emerge from the 2 strings beautifully. Play it loud and it might smash the windows in your house.

The format is flipped upside down on side B. A single series of notes is repeated, but it’s not a loop. Blood is pumping, muscles are twitching, a body is moving to generate these sounds. There’s simplicity and tension in the form at first. But my brain begins to relax into it and the space that opens up is vast. My sense of time is altered as overtones and harmonics are bouncing off the walls of a large room. Again, the range of the 2 strings is endless and beautiful. 2 strings, 2 sides, different yet connected to each other. Like Bill himself, I’m grateful this music exists and that I’m here to witness it. Light it up for yourself and see."
