"Illuminationsは、2016年から2021年の間に書かれた、共通の作曲言語を持つソロ作品と室内楽作品のコレクションである。各作品はソフトウェア楽譜として作曲され、演奏中にリアルタイムで音楽作品が構築される。音符はアニメーション化された五線譜上で演奏者に紹介され、ゆっくりと見え隠れする。不透明性をダイナミックに利用し、音楽家たちはアニメーション化された五線譜をゆっくりとループさせながら演奏し、そのたびにモチーフや対位法的な線が徐々に現れては消えていく。

これらの作品の最初のアイデアは、2016年に10本のヴァイオリンと10本のチェロのための作品「Tide」のレコーディングを編集しているときに思いついた。弦楽器の大きなコンソートは、表記された音程の上に倍音のウォッシュを生み出していた。私は録音から倍音を分離し、その周りに新しいハーモニーを加えるソフトウェア・パッチを作った。当時私は、このジェネレーターが『Tide』の第3の声となり、音楽の形式的な瞬間にテクスチャー内の倍音を照らし出すのではないかと考えていた。ある日の午後、私はイルミネーション・パッチの倍音ハーモニーを単独で聴き、それが独立したコンポジションとしてより美しいことに気づいた。タイドのアッパーな空気は、イルミネーションの音楽言語へと開花したのだ。"

"The Illuminations are a collection of solo and chamber works with a shared compositional language, written between 2016 and 2021. The pieces are composed as software scores, which build the musical work in real-time during each performance. Notes are introduced to the players on animated staves, slowly fading into view and then away again. Using opacity as dynamic, the musicians perform the animated staves as slow loops, with motives and contrapuntal lines gradually emerging and disappearing on each pass.

The initial idea for these pieces arrived as I was editing a recording of “Tide,” my piece for ten violins and ten cellos, in 2016. The large consort of strings produced washes of overtones above the notated pitches. I built a software patch that isolated overtones on the recording and added new harmonies around them. At the time, I thought that this generator might become a third voice within “Tide,” illuminating overtones within the texture at formal moments in the music. One afternoon, I listened to the overtone harmonizations of the Illumination patch on their own and realized that it was more beautiful as a separate composition. The upper air of Tide bloomed into the musical language of the Illuminations."
