Brachliegen Tapes:

"THE YULE GOAT is 32 minutes of frosted leaf-mulch noise from DEGRADATION. Building on their debut LP LEADLINED — described by The Quietus’ Noel Gardner as ‘livewire machine sludge… underpinned by a chassis of blowout bass’ — DEGRADATION empty their carrier bag of heavy electronics as they trudge through the icy winds of a bleak recession winter. The second of Brachliegen’s seasonal releases to mark the festive season – following George Rayner-Law’s The Tryal of Old Christmas – THE YULE GOAT delivers a spectral gift from the harvest, a bundle of processed noise and drones, pickled, jarred and tied with a ribbon. Wassailing atop the mythic traditions of Yulemas, DEGRADATION mill grains of festive noise and field recordings in search of the ever dwindling horn of plenty.

Opener ‘Childermas’ filters a blizzard of blinding arctic noise, melting the cacophony into a pummelling wall of harsh noise before reharmonising the slipstream into a granular digital snowstorm. Machine elves and a field of goats enact a fragmented call-and-response duet in ‘Ebb, Static…’ before being joined from the mist by a third voice, which glides over the depths of a cyclical series of modulating throbs from the unknown. On the reverse, the cassette’s B-side opens up with ‘Forbidden Tones’, a legally distinct SylvianXSakomoto inspired collision of subbass Japanese reeds, Italian church bells and tortured microcassette longing. ‘Borealis’ journeys deep into the darkness of an arctic ice-tomb to discover Frankenstein’s monster, frozen out of time and the release’s finale ‘Julebukker’ pierces the mist and static with considered reflexion on the folkloric chilblains that have desecrated the English psyche.

Christmas draws near and we huddle together in search of warmth and good cheer. Embrace the seasonal early nights and crack out the big coat out from under the bed; swaddle your loved ones in these 5 tracks of variated festive noise, collaged together as a balm for the desolation of winter’s dereliction. "
