Aural Canyon:

"Natural Flavors’ second album, Now Zoning, is all NOW man; these tender airwaves are intended to transport you through nostalgia with a grounding presence. These zones emerge from a collaborative process of structured improvisation. An intellectual mold is conceived and delicately filled with a particular mood until the music can hold the shape on its own and become something all together itself.

The first half of this album was recorded on a beautiful day at Pease Park in Austin, Texas. The three musicians held space for a live audience with a two-hour musical improvisation: beginning in one key and chromatically moving through keys a half-step at a time. The tracks selected were some of their favorite moments from this event.

The second half of the album was recorded in Grainger Weston’s home on the same weekend. These songs were born from a process of thinking about the music as sculpture shaped by time and the emotive movement of harmony."

Originally born in Liverpool, England, to Welsh-Irish and German parents, his family later migrated to Australia in 1965. Moving to the suburbs in La Perouse, he grew up in a mixed, multicultural community, where he fostered friendships with existing indigenous members and Iberian migrants. His formative migrant experience and his curiosity about vernacular, as well as notated music, led him to study music formally where he was attracted to ethnomusicology. From a self-taught guitarist to an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Michael’s recorded output spans many different genres and styles – he was a member of the Renaissance Players, an early music group; Sirocco, a pioneering cross-cultural folk group; and Southern Crossings, an innovative ethno-classical ensemble.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBy 1990, he had moved beyond his earlier musical endeavours, and away from Australia, with ‘Windshift’ seeing him draw on resources from the Asia-Pacific and Europe. Originally born in Liverpool, England, to Welsh-Irish and German parents, his family later migrated to Australia in 1965. Moving to the suburbs in La Perouse, he grew up in a mixed, multicultural community, where he fostered friendships with existing indigenous members and Iberian migrants. His formative migrant experience and his curiosity about vernacular, as well as notated music, led him to study music formally where he was attracted to ethnomusicology. In this dark place I found a lot of inner peace and strength in watching the repetitive cycles of the tide, soaking up every sound, every movement, every feeling and, eventually, reconnecting to myself in a way I never had before. Through this album I discovered the importance of repetitive sound in giving space and structure to my autism.
