"Relent’ is Ábris Gryllus’ fourth studio album, a two-piece long-form audio material soon to be released on EXILES.

“I don't believe in dualism, but when I analyze certain situations I find myself on some kind of axis between two endpoints, it’s a sort of binary fatalism. This material was born in such a stretched out situation, and the tension between the two musical entities is a reflection on these dynamics.”

‘Relent’ is vulnerability in change, a relentless detachment, an assessment of loss, and sacrifice by devotion. Gryllus’ ambient trance project could be interpreted as a 40-minute confession on the synthetic feeling of home found in a Wunder-Baum New Car air freshener at a night drive guided by suicidal Hungarian landscapes.

‘Relent’ is forced empathogenic hugs and hired touches, repeated goodbyes, oxytocin-fueled hair sniffs, nameless chemsex encounters and systematic love bombing DMs: a soul seeking escape from the samsara of endless trauma bonding. The easing certainty of death.

But ‘Relent’ is molly-swollen lips too, extorting an "I miss you" backstage, or becoming a parent of a child. Sometimes it is light pollution absorbed by watery pupils, it’s crying at an airport, dreams and fears overshared with strangers, a face you wish to forget and the tragedy of undying hope."

Following ‘Rianás’ and ‘Force Quit’ (the latter released on Temporary Nites), this latest EP of his follows yibai’s journey into gritty, uncanny worlds where stuttering and rumbling effects, along with defined, leading melodies dominate these six tracks.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eLooping swirls of sound introduce us to ‘Hatch’ – the rapid pulses implicate the birth of an organism, an entity that is yet to see the light of day. ‘Breadth’ follows with airy and misty horns and hard-hitting beats, accompanying a slow and graceful melody under several layers of swampy synths. Passing the torch on to ‘Mass’, the first moments indeed resemble the intensity of the previous track, but the cadencing flow quickly turns into a long, droney, dense material of steaming blackness.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe dramatic arc breaks in the middle with ‘Balm’. A distorted noise introduces the track, which then turns into menacing drones of sustained buzzes and retriggered gestures, building up slowly into a polyphonic chorus of wounded voices. It falls apart constantly, then tries again, and with the support of fragile, voice-like\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e echoes it reaches a bridge to the final section of the EP.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eSudden bursts and carefully placed units of silence dominate the last two tracks of ‘Hatch + Foster’. The penultimate track, ‘Foster’ creates a harsh mixture of spry harps and the sound of a desperate scream. Piece by piece, it adds more and more unsettling elements with a defined pulse, turning the composition into a focused exercise of inhale and exhale. A musician who is searching to encounter sound, rather than chasing and catching the songs, is striving for, in Duchamp’s words, ‘to make visible the invisible’ or, in this case, to transform silence into music, and that’s exactly how 'Sketches 1-17' came to be.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn the midst of winter, back in 2021, artist Christopher Colm Morrin found himself suddenly stuck at home and alone for the holiday season. Confronted with the abrupt change of plans, he decided to cope by focusing entirely on making an archive of sound, experimenting with a guitar and a few simple pedals, and storing all the recordings in a folder named ‘sketches’. The music came\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e out, raw and sincere, like a river flow, with its high and low tides, sometimes barely there, others overflowing through everything around it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSketching is an act of giving body to an idea or a sensation surrounding us, whispering, waiting to be given a sort of materiality, to become audible, or visible, able to be experienced.
