"approaches #2 is a work that is uncompromisingly dedicated to the intensity of sound. This drone/noise longform composition is a raw, demanding soundscape - not intended as a sprinkling, but as a conscious experience. Almost noisy industrial sounds permeate the piece, characterized by metallic rattling textures, feedback loops and tugging surfaces. Underneath - barely perceptible but constant - lies a deep bass layer that is more perceptible than audible and lends the composition a physical weight. What follows is an extreme repetition: hypnotic and relentless. Uniformity becomes a method here, a means of transformation. It is a ghost ride through a tonal wasteland in which every deviation from the norm suddenly seems like a crack in space. Everything moves, but nothing changes - and this is precisely where the power of this album lies."

Things soon move into the uncomfortably claustrophobic “The Landowners,” where an oblique narrative by Estonian artist Kris Lemsalu spirals into a blurred fantasy of musical roads, nocturnal wanderings, and entrapment under floorboards. The B-side relocates itself further out as “They Cling to Each Other” hovers over uncharted ketamine lows while “The Sleepwalkers” lurches around a spider-like environment. “Amusement” tackles a cosmic music, but one that hurtles itself far beyond the outer regions of the cosmos, while “5:00am” contains within the greatest sound known to mankind. It is also the first full-length vinyl LP in Tanuki Records’ catalogue. There is a story behind this new album, although you would not guess what it is, unless told. Keen to explore new ways of playing, as he has done during his whole career since he began playing with his band Osso Exotico in the 1980’s, Maranha suggested that they should all play other instruments that their regular ones. He himself switched his organ for the drums, Manuel Mota is on bass, Margarida Garcia on the organ and Miguel Abras on a fostex 4 track tape recorder and voice. Crafting their music as acoustic drone compositions, Maranha and his ensemble play primarily with time. Their compositions are less about inventing new structures every time, than about the paradoxical challenge of building a stasis retaining the forcefulness of a forward motion.
