We became great friends right away and have remained so since. Matt has been an on-and-off member of IFCO (full time now), and we have worked together on a number of other projects. This is to say, I might be a little biased. (But everyone is biased, no matter how much they write in the third person.) Matt has been doing solo tape music for well over ten years now. My memory says it started out as a live thing with a mixing desk and a bunch of cheap cassette machines. (My memory says a lot of things.) I’m not sure exactly what he does now, but it is something similar and still involves cassette tapes. There are loads of people doing music with field recordings and tapes, etc., and, for the most part, the music is a messy yawn-fest. That is not The Krefting Way. Each of the six pieces on Finer Points has a limited number of elements that slowly revolve. Each track is discrete in its sound pallet but made in a similar fashion. The overall effect is like the bottles in a Joseph Cornell box. My favorite bottle is the one for a guitar (Spanish?) It manages to hit a sweet spot between hypnotic and unsettling. The whole LP is great and expertly sequenced. (The lost art of recording!) Individually these audio documents are gorgeously simple, matter-of-fact presentations of travels. It woke me everyday of my week long stay. It was like a barnyard turned up to 11. I brought a DAT machine and two Audio Technica microphones for the purpose of making field recordings on the trip. I woke up before the sun came up and set up the equipment in the dark. The first sound on the record is the moment the sun came over the horizon.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe bamboo forests on Maui were seared into my memory from my first time in Hawaii. On my second trip, armed with a first edition Edirol digital recorder, I hung out in the forest for a couple of hours to make the recordings. I noticed 3 distinct sounds (though there are more). The wood block clunking of the stocks, the squeaking of the thin branches flicking and slipping off neighboring\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e plants and the white noise rustling of the leaves on top of the giant clusters.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis beautiful LP features site-specific recordings and photographs by Tom Recchion, a sound and visual artist\/composer\/potter\/art director and graphic designer. He is the co-founder of the legendary Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) and has been an active, integral participant in the arts for more than forty years. I woke up before the sun came up and set up the equipment in the dark. The first sound on the record is the moment the sun came over the horizon.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe bamboo forests on Maui were seared into my memory from my first time in Hawaii. On my second trip, armed with a first edition Edirol digital recorder, I hung out in the forest for a couple of hours to make the recordings. I noticed 3 distinct sounds (though there are more). The wood block clunking of the stocks, the squeaking of the thin branches flicking and slipping off neighboring\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e plants and the white noise rustling of the leaves on top of the giant clusters.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis beautiful LP features site-specific recordings and photographs by Tom Recchion, a sound and visual artist\/composer\/potter\/art director and graphic designer. Zachary Hay finally out of hiding with his first self titled album. When we first discovered his music we were floored by his stream of consciousness approach to acoustic guitar. These ten songs represent a very sincere and intuitive approach to guitar as if it were an unknown object. Black Saint and Soul Note always placed the artists, their visions, and their music at the center, giving them total freedom of creative expression. It is thanks to this constant, cutting-edge and meticulous commitment that today we have some of the shiniest musical gems by Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Max Roach, Anthony Braxton, David Murray, and many others.
