In June 2018, four musicians convened: Johannesburg composer and bow expert Cara Stacey, South African violinist and composer Galina Juritz, German harpist Antonia Ravens and Swiss guitarist and sonic explorer Beat Keller.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTogether they improvised using a graphic score titled “Luhlata njengetjani” (“Green like the grass” in the southern African Siswati language), inspired by the rivers of eSwatini, blackbirds in the parks of Basel and the evocative, red-flowered umcinci or erythrina tree. The South African umrhubhe mouthbow’s dense harmonics folded around skittering, fractal violin loops; temperate swells of guitar were punctuated by agitated harp pings and the hearty thuds of Ugandan and Mozambican lamellophones.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis joyous, unfettered outpouring criss-crossed between southern Africa and Europe, forwards and backwards, for the following two years. Each of these sound worlds are reflected in the eight tracks of Reality, but in a looser, more improvised form which, for Stillman, represents a return to his formative, early influences in the recordings of John and Alice Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThese luminary voices serve as relevant reference points for an album that Stillman made as an attempt to, as he articulates it, \"draw attention to, and unconditionally praise, the directly experienced world.\" For Stillman, (and for Jason Evans, whose photographs feature on the album cover art) this is the 'reality' sensed in small scale, momentary perceptions of beauty (read: \"is\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e-ness\") that reveal themselves when we are awake to the present.
