Currently working on her PhD in Musicology at UCLA, her trajectory has been unorthodox. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you’ve never been there, doesn’t really scream “Avant-Garde” (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eFrom a young age, Sarah was a driven pianist (and figure-skater, although that’s a story for a different time). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eSarah is a considered person. I find few people that have the diligence and resolve to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003etake their time\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewith music… especially in a live context.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eI respect that about her.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThe first time I saw Sarah perform, I presumptuously told her that her music reminded me of my favorite Mirror albums (the exceptional project of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eSarah was not familiar with Mirror, so the compliment was initially lost on her.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eYears back I was in the same situation when a review compared my music to Andrew Chalk, who was unknown to me at the time.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eSo I felt a kinship in our magnetic drift towards unspoken and clustered beauty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eLet Night Come On Bells End The Day\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003efollows the release of her “sound-wheel” LP\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eAll My Circles Run,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003ewhich examines the isolation of different instruments\u003ci\u003e.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eLet Night Come On…,\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erecorded mainly with a Mellotron and electronic organ,\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003efeels like a return to the nest.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eBurrowed in the studio, Davachi was the only performer on this album.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eShe both splays her compositional architecture and re-contextualizes the essence of her early output.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eShe chiseled careful and shadowed hymns; anchors of emotion.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eTwo pillars of this album are “Mordents”, which to my ears drops hints of her love for Progressive rock music – and “Buhrstone,” comparable to a sombre funeral march of piano and flutes. These two examine punctuations of early music, gently plucking melodies and movements.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThe three other compositions are tonal works, blowing slow jets of lapping harmonics.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWriting this description now, I find it hard to separate “At Hand” from filmmaker Paul Clipson, who made a melancholic film for this piece of Sarah’s.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eA fitting title for Sarah and Paul’s relationship – frequently working in orbit of each other, meticulous and tactile.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eI cherish this track as a memory of Paul.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThis is a lovely album to fill an evening living room with. Currently working on her PhD in Musicology at UCLA, her trajectory has been unorthodox. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you’ve never been there, doesn’t really scream “Avant-Garde” (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eFrom a young age, Sarah was a driven pianist (and figure-skater, although that’s a story for a different time). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eSarah is a considered person. Having become aquainted through their shared love of music technology, Uwe Zahn (Arovane) and Taylor Deupree only found it natural to work on a project together based around one of their favorite synthesizers. As Zahn recalls:\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“After a long email conversation, Taylor and I came up with the idea of recording an album only with sound sources from the Nonlinear Labs C15 synthesizer that we both own. The first sketches were made with an exchanging of C15 patches and a constantly growing shared sound pool that led to the structure of the first songs. Prefering to work in person, but hampered by the pandemic, we resorted to sending projects back and forth. and developed an organic method that inspired and excited us.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt was very exciting to see how Taylor’s skills in the field of mixing combined with my experience in sound design. We both share a love of experimentation, gave each other very free rein in manipulating each other’s sounds. Most of the tracks are based on improvisations, loops and many layers of sounds processed in our studios. The results became our album\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Skal_Ghost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe songs continued to evolve as the duo worked. Distilling the rich sounds down to their most important textures and forms and creating many layers of processed and re-processed sounds all embued with their love of synthesis and sound exploration. Arovane’s dense textural beds of tone and harmony lay the foundation for the more broken and fragile melodics of Deupree’s organic loops. Deupree concludes:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“It was exciting for me to work with one of the great sound designers of our humble music scene. Uwe and I not only both have a love of all things music technology-related but quickly developed a friendship as well shared stories of food and our homes. The music really became the seed and bond of friendship. Working and exploring sounds together is great, but the real takeaway is the story-making, learning and enriching of our lives. This is always the true goal of collaborations for me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSkal_Ghost is a deep and haunting release with rich details and small worlds packed into each sound and movement. Having become aquainted through their shared love of music technology, Uwe Zahn (Arovane) and Taylor Deupree only found it natural to work on a project together based around one of their favorite synthesizers. As Zahn recalls:\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“After a long email conversation, Taylor and I came up with the idea of recording an album only with sound sources from the Nonlinear Labs C15 synthesizer that we both own. The first sketches were made with an exchanging of C15 patches and a constantly growing shared sound pool that led to the structure of the first songs. Prefering to work in person, but hampered by the pandemic, we resorted to sending projects back and forth. and developed an organic method that inspired and excited us.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt was very exciting to see how Taylor’s skills in the field of mixing combined with my experience in sound design. We both share a love of experimentation, gave each other very free rein in manipulating each other’s sounds. Most of the tracks are based on improvisations, loops and many layers of sounds processed in our studios. The results became our album\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Skal_Ghost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe songs continued to evolve as the duo worked. Distilling the rich sounds down to their most important textures and forms and creating many layers of processed and re-processed sounds all embued with their love of synthesis and sound exploration. Arovane’s dense textural beds of tone and harmony lay the foundation for the more broken and fragile melodics of Deupree’s organic loops.
