"窓から差し込む太陽の光に照らされた埃のように、レコードが余韻を残すことがある。 Weeks Islandの『Droste』はそんなレコードのひとつで、ペダルスティールによるディープなアンビエント・パッセージのコレクションだ。表向きはそう始まり、そして終わるのだが、実際には潮の満ち引きのように感じられる。

ここはウィークス・アイランドが存在するルイジアナ州南部のバイユーだ。しかし、Drosteのトラックは、もはや地元の地図には載っていない水域の名前が付けられている。諸行無常へのオマージュにふさわしい。

Weeks Islandは、グラミー賞受賞のケイジャングループLost Bayou Ramblersのギタリストとしての本業の合間を縫って、ジョニー・カンポスがニューオーリンズにあるバンドメイトの家を訪れ、午後2回にわたってこの音楽の大部分を録音したことから、2018年に始まった音楽プロジェクトだ。 
彼はそのバンドメイト、カークランド・ミドルトンにケインズのチキン・ストリップで支払いを済ませたのだ。

ドロステは当初、2020年にヌーヴォー・エレクトリック・レコードという地元のレーベルからリリースされた。私たちは、かつてLost Bayou RamblersのメンバーだったLCDのコリー・リチーからこのレコードのことを聞き、レコードにカットするために数年にわたるプロセスを開始した。何度も試行錯誤を重ね、3曲の新曲を加えた後、ボブ・ウェストンは彼らしく美しい音色のカットを完成させ、バージニア州アレクサンドリアにあるファーネス・レコード・プレスの優しい手に渡した。(いつも仕事が細かい) "

"Sometimes records linger, hanging in the air like dust caught by the sun coming in from the window. Weeks Island’s Droste is one of those records, a collection of deep ambient pedal-steel passages that ostensibly begin and end, yes, but actually feel more like tides rolling in and back out, your brain lulled, hardly aware of the progress until it’s over and you’re left thinking, “Where am I?”

You are in the bayous of Southern Louisiana, where Weeks Island the place exists. The tracks on Droste, however, are named for bodies of water that no longer appear on local maps, their names wiped thanks to the area’s disintegrating shorelines. Fitting tribute to the impermanence of, uh, everything.

Weeks Island the musical project began in 2018 when Jonny Campos, on a break from his main gig playing guitar for the Grammy-winning Cajun group Lost Bayou Ramblers, ventured to his bandmate’s house in New Orleans and recorded the bulk of this music across two afternoons. It wasn’t all heavy: he paid that bandmate, Kirkland Middleton, in Cane’s chicken strips.

Droste originally appeared in 2020 on a local label named Nouveau Electric Records. We heard about it through LCD’s Korey Richey, an erstwhile Lost Bayou member, and began a years-long process to cut the record to vinyl, a task made difficult by the sharp crests of harmonic distortion that dot the record. After more than a few tries and the addition of three brand new tracks, Bob Weston, as he does, sank a beautiful sounding cut, and then passed it to the gentle hands at Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, VA.
