サイケデリックなアンビエント・ブルース16曲を収録。DLコード付属。

以下、レーベルによる解説です。

"塩気、土の香り、そして静寂が、Herb Loreの『Mysticism』に染み渡っている。『While I』が太平洋岸北西部の豊かな精神を脈打たせているのに対し、『Mysticism』は、ブルックリンの至る所に見られる静かなひとときへの賛歌として構想された。夜明けにインスピレーションを得て、公園や海岸へ日の出を見に出かけたり、街の自然の音に耳を傾け、その音を将来記録しようと試みながら、のんびりと過ごす日々。

しかし、絶え間ない雨のせいで空気は重苦しく、レンガの壁や鋳鉄の歩道に、絶え間ないブーンという音が反響していた。雨は終わることなく大地を潤し、のんびりと過ごす日々は、本とギターを手に屋内で過ごすようになった。

アニー・ディラードの『Holy the Firm』を読んだことで、『Mysticism』の視野は広がった。中世キリスト教の隠遁者たちの思索や、瞑想的なカバラの実践が音楽に滲み込んだ。伴奏のない反復的なギター演奏——しばしば限界（あるいはその寸前）まで弾き続けられる——は、雨音や鳥のさえずりと共鳴し、自然界に自己を溶け込ませようとする試みとして、静寂のエネルギーがフィンガーピッキングのメロディーに織り込まれた。

陰鬱な日々は、実験と忍耐を促した。急ぐことは何一つなかった。そして、太陽が頻繁に顔を出すようになった一方で、湿気が屋内に忍び込み、壁を汗ばませた。ジーン・ウルフの文学やクラーク・アシュトン・スミスの怪奇小説を貪るように読みふけり、長時間の作業を経て削ぎ落とされたこれらのギター曲は、完成したと感じられた。

『Mysticism』のレコーディングは、蒸し暑い夏の数ヶ月間、孤独の中で行われた。瞑想と無我の思想に立ち返り、各音楽要素は一発録りで演奏され、身体的な限界が、その瞬間の音楽を形作り、花開かせることを許した。そして「自我」がその派手な頭をもたげるたびに、録音は中断され、再び始められた。フィールドレコーディングとオスティナートのアコースティックギターを除き、他のすべての音楽要素は即興で演奏され、その特定の瞬間のムードを捉えている。ソフィー・スパーンロフトとボッシュ・アクラムは、それぞれ『Mysticism』の多くの楽曲にボーカル、アップライト・ベース、クラリネットを提供した。

異例に過酷な春と夏を耐え抜いた後、オレゴン、ニューブランズウィック、ノバスコシア、ニューファンドランドへの晩夏の旅は、『Mysticism』の最終曲である『Enlightenment』の浄化的な激しさと並行していた。ブルックリンでのフィールドレコーディングの大部分は、オレゴンとニューファンドランドでのフィールドレコーディングに置き換えられた。

『Mysticism』は、自然界との一体感を得るために、自己を抑制し、手放そうとする試みである。各楽曲は、謙虚さから悟りへと至る旅路を示す、ユダヤ教カバラの「生命の樹」の節点を表している。その中では、剣と魔法のスタイルを通じて、その旅路が語られている。"

" Brine, petrichor, & stillness permeate Herb Lore’s Mysticism. While I pulses with the lush spirit of the Pacific Northwest, Mysticism was conceived as an ode to quieter moments found throughout Brooklyn. Dawn inspired sunrise trips to the park and shore; meandering days spent listening to the city’s natural sounds and attempting their future capture.

But because of ceaseless rain, the mood was sticky and an incessant humming reverberated off brick walls & wroughtiron walkways. Idle days were now spent inside with a book and guitar as the rain, neverending, nourished the Earth.

Upon reading Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm the scope of Mysticism shifted. The postulations of medieval Christian anchorites and meditative Kabbalistic practices seeped into the music. Unaccompanied repetitive guitar, often played until failure (or close to it), found an audience in the rain & birdsong; the energy of stillness woven into the finger-picked melodies as an attempt to lose the self in the natural world.

Dreary days encouraged experimentation and patience. Nothing was urgent. And while the Sun now frequently appeared, humidity crept indoors & caused the walls to sweat. Gene Wolfe’s literature and Clark Ashton Smith’s weird fiction were voraciously consumed and these guitar compositions, now whittled down after many hours, felt complete.

The recording of Mysticism occurred in solitude during the sweltering Summer months. Returning to the ideas of meditation & selflessness, each musical element was played in one continuous take allowing physical limitations to shape & flourish the music within each moment in time. And each time the ‘self’ reared its gaudy head, recording ceased & began again. Aside from the field recordings & the ostinato acoustic guitar, all other musical elements were improvised, capturing the mood of that particular moment. Sophie Sparnroft & Bosch Akram respectively contributed voice & upright bass, and clarinet to many of Mysticism’s compositions.

Late Summer journeys to Oregon, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, & Newfoundland paralleled the cathartic fury of ‘Enlightenment’, the final composition on Mysticism, after enduring the uncharacteristically brutal Spring & Summer. The majority of Brooklyn field recordings were replaced with field recordings from Oregon & Newfoundland.

Mysticism is an attempt at restraining & divesting oneself in order to achieve a oneness with the natural world. Each composition represents a node of the Jewish Kabbalistic Tree of Life charting one’s journey from Humility to Enlightenment. Within, the journey is relayed through sword & sorcery stylings."
