Here, a quartet comes together while staying apart to miraculous ends, leaving space for memory to wander in a shimmery autumnal dappling. Chris Jusell (violin), Chaz Prymek (guitars, field recordings, voice), Matthew Sage (keyboards, percussion, voice, field recording), and Patrick Shiroishi (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute, glockenspiel, samples, whistling, voice) have collaborated on projects on and off in the last several years (some you may have heard, some yet to be released), but here, the four worked together as a singular unit in a playful and focused way. These compositions, a kind of wistful cool jazz diluted by ambient figures and new age hallmarks, could possibly be tucked into the “Post Rock” sector, but may actually be more aligned with ECM’s school of playership. Through a combination of varied classical training and (here subdued) experimental tendencies, a harmony is achieved wherein melody is itself a texture to play with. In their solo work, some of these players wander in much more cerebral, jarring, psychedelic, unconventional airs, but on Fuubutsushi, they present as a tightly connected quartet prepared to woo\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003elisteners with these honeyed impressionistic strains. Songs are structured around muted piano parts from Sage that he augmented with percussion and occasional synthesizer flourishes. Flutters of reeds and winds from Shiroishi paint the scenes with nostalgic tenderness and vibrancy. Prymek’s nimble guitar figures add longing and character, texture and dynamism. Jusell’s violins drift about in emotive drafts and eddies of harmony, darting into lyrical spurts at opportune moments. There is a restraint and a mutual leaning-back that these players offer one another on these songs, and so, they all have their space to stretch out, to incorporate emptiness into their parts, to smile at one another warmly in those spaces. Like The Alvaret Ensemble, this project is the result of some improvisations in a Church. But at not the same place.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe FEAN project gets its inspiration from the ecological decay of peatland in the Dutch province Friesland and in other parts of Europe. Agriculture and peat extraction are threatening the landscape severely and with long term consequences. Also featuring super special guest Jaimie Branch on \"Peaceable.\"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eKVL sits nicely in the same headspace as recent modern improv that eschews a more traditional \"jazz\" label. Think Matthew Lux's Contra\/Fact, Jaimie Branch's Fly or Die, Shabaka Hutching's Sons of Kemet or The Comet Is Coming, Ben Lamar Gay, Rob Mazurek and others. Of course, many folks will point toward the past Chicago rumblings of a group like Isotope 217 of which Matthew Lux was a member (and deep heads will recognize mastering engineer Casey Rice worked with as well). And yes, there may be some sonic similarities, but as you might expect from the members of KVL, they easily differentiate themselves from their influences and contemporaries.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a deep sense of minimalism and groove throughout Volume 1 that is a bit more contemplative and open ala late 60's Miles Davis. Kirchner's playing is beautifully understated throughout, barely even touching the drums on \"Peaceable\" but still setting a vibe\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e. Van Duerm takes on the most \"leader\" like role with his (also beautifully understated) various keyboards that modulate and keep things moving forward throughout the album. Of course, many folks will point toward the past Chicago rumblings of a group like Isotope 217 of which Matthew Lux was a member (and deep heads will recognize mastering engineer Casey Rice worked with as well). And yes, there may be some sonic similarities, but as you might expect from the members of KVL, they easily differentiate themselves from their influences and contemporaries.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a deep sense of minimalism and groove throughout Volume 1 that is a bit more contemplative and open ala late 60's Miles Davis. Kirchner's playing is beautifully understated throughout, barely even touching the drums on \"Peaceable\" but still setting a vibe\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e. Van Duerm takes on the most \"leader\" like role with his (also beautifully understated) various keyboards that modulate and keep things moving forward throughout the album.
