Sometimes they’re written seemingly in a single breath. Other times, they take years or decades to bubble up the surface. Mystery Circles reached out and asked whether I’d be interested in making a kind of spiritual successor to David Rothbaum’s wonderful record Miniatures. It was intimidating, because I possess enormous respect for David’s work— but the prompt sounded fun. So I happily agreed.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI record something in my studio almost every day, and post a lot of those recordings online in one form or another. I had a feeling that this record already mostly existed somewhere, scattered across an endless ocean of Ableton project files. Mystery Circles and I slowly pulled together a big shoebox of our favorite posts of mine from the past few years and pared those down to a handful. That collection formed the first outline for Vessel.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI spent the next six months arranging those pieces into a sonic narrative that felt cohesive, and then wrote music to fill what I felt were gaps in the fabric of the story. about a thousand ways to approach making a record. Sometimes they’re written seemingly in a single breath. Other times, they take years or decades to bubble up the surface. They can be meticulously arranged, haphazardly thrown together, or anything in between.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eVessel kind of snuck up on me, which was a first. Mystery Circles reached out and asked whether I’d be interested in making a kind of spiritual successor to David Rothbaum’s wonderful record Miniatures. It was intimidating, because I possess enormous respect for David’s work— but the prompt sounded fun. So I happily agreed.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI record something in my studio almost every day, and post a lot of those recordings online in one form or another. I had a feeling that this record already mostly existed somewhere, scattered across an endless ocean of Ableton project files. Mystery Circles and I slowly pulled together a big shoebox of our favorite posts of mine from the past few years and pared those down to a handful. That collection formed the first outline for Vessel.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI spent the next six months arranging those pieces into a sonic narrative that felt cohesive, and then wrote music to fill what I felt were gaps in the fabric of the story. The result is a\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e record that is part found collage, part intentional composition, and (hopefully) all fun to listen to. The song titles remain the dates on which the music was captured. It was constructed— as usual— with modular synths, tape loops, desktop synthesizers, pedals, and time. Lots and lots of time.
