One must uphold the rules first, and place their personal contribution second to those rules. The game, the rules, the act of playing becomes more precious than what is created. In this case, the rules have led to a thing being built, an assemblage, and here, with this impossible sculpture of recorded sound, we are left to play while the wind moves the light.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA group of collaborators – Ben Felton, Daniel Klag, Bill Gillim, John Crouch, Mike Walters, Dan Goldberg – used this exquisite corpse approach, this game, these rules, to create Assemblage. Many of these players have worked across many labels (including pre-Cached Patient Sounds), under many monikers, and have a massive collective discography. Here, they present their first exercise as Ex Corp. Two sprawling tracks made by following a prompt laid out by Felton: he sends a track to someone, they record responding to what he sent, he sends the responders track to someone, they respond, repeat. So, each artist only has the previous contributors’ reaction to a buzzing and hidden network of playing and thinking at any given moment. A kind of psychic musical game of telephone. In the end, all contributions are overlaid to create each of these two movements.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eEvoking a kind of 2008 experimental nostalgia, these two experiments feel like a group of friends in a basement with low ceilings zoning out amongst piles of gear. Both close and also distant. Think Caboladies, early Emeralds, WZT Hearts, Sunburned Hand of the Man. A distinctly psychedelic kind of music-as-adventure born from the collisions of noise, new age, post rock, spiritual jazz and “free music.” Equal parts shambolic and beatific. Synths and drones, hissing electronics, jangling sonorous guitars, quasi-tribal jazz percussion and drums flutter together in curious twists. Much like many exquisite corpse drawings, things become disjointed or confused in places, and that confusion feels more like the rules of the game working to create tension and release. In some ways we listen with questions. One must uphold the rules first, and place their personal contribution second to those rules. The game, the rules, the act of playing becomes more precious than what is created. In this case, the rules have led to a thing being built, an assemblage, and here, with this impossible sculpture of recorded sound, we are left to play while the wind moves the light.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA group of collaborators – Ben Felton, Daniel Klag, Bill Gillim, John Crouch, Mike Walters, Dan Goldberg – used this exquisite corpse approach, this game, these rules, to create Assemblage. Many of these players have worked across many labels (including pre-Cached Patient Sounds), under many monikers, and have a massive collective discography. Here, they present their first exercise as Ex Corp. Two sprawling tracks made by following a prompt laid out by Felton: he sends a track to someone, they record responding to what he sent, he sends the responders track to someone, they respond, repeat. So, each artist only has the previous contributors’ reaction to a buzzing and hidden network of playing and thinking at any given moment. A kind of psychic musical game of telephone. In the end, all contributions are overlaid to create each of these two movements.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eEvoking a kind of 2008 experimental nostalgia, these two experiments feel like a group of friends in a basement with low ceilings zoning out amongst piles of gear. Both close and also distant. Think Caboladies, early Emeralds, WZT Hearts, Sunburned Hand of the Man. A distinctly psychedelic kind of music-as-adventure born from the collisions of noise, new age, post rock, spiritual jazz and “free music.” Equal parts shambolic and beatific. Synths and drones, hissing electronics, jangling sonorous guitars, quasi-tribal jazz percussion and drums flutter together in curious twists. Much like many exquisite corpse drawings, things become disjointed or confused in places, and that confusion feels more like the rules of the game working to create tension and release. In some ways we listen with questions. Like Tchicai, they, too, knew their \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ejazz and classical heritage, but they enjoyed dynamiting the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efoundations to see what might emerge from the rubble. The dynamic \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etension between order and chaos, between irony and sincerity, between \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003econtinuity and disruption created enormous unpredictability and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eambiguity in their music, which they all seemed to enjoy. Tchicai is a bastion of calm \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003elinear phrasing, a yogi of intensity and focus. Bennink, interjecting \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efrantic, clickety-clack stick work and outbursts of thrashing cymbals \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eand thundering bass drum, is an antic presence, a musical genius \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edisguised as a willful child. Mengelberg plays many roles, always with \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ea sense of mischief and humor. His steady chords define a beat, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003esparkling runs embellish a bandmember’s phrasing, and dense note \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eclusters interrupt forward movement. Dørge slips and skitters among \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethe instruments, making sounds that hold everything together, from \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etense background scraping to fireworks bursts of sound. Steinmetz, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewith his burnished tone, proves himself to be a deliberate melodicist \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003elike Tchicai, although always in his own unique voice.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e Mengelberg’s subversive bit of whimsey, “Is Is Is a Question,” is \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ea waltz that has to keep fighting against a highly unreliable tempo. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe effect is both funny and melancholy. But this was a band that thrived on discontinuity and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edislocation, so inevitably Bennink makes one of his grand entrances \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eand ushers in a clamorous group improvisation for the final minutes.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOf course, Tchicai’s international collaborations extended beyond \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eneighboring Holland. He was a most cosmopolitan musician, performing \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eand recording with musicians in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and Europe. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ePerhaps surprisingly, one of his most sympathetic European partners \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewas German bassist Peter Kowald.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eTchicai’s did share some musical affinities with the German \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eimprovising scene. As Kowald and his compatriots, such as Peter \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eBrötzmann and Alexander von Schlippenbach, took inspiration from the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ecathartic energy and the collective improvisation of free jazz, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eespecially Albert Ayler. Tchicai, of course, had played with Ayler and r\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eecorded the landmark “New York Eye and Ear Control” with him in 1964. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eThus he was a direct link to one of the largest influences on the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eGerman improv scene. His appearance on John Coltrane’s “Ascension”, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewould have also earned him respect among the hard-blowing Germans. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eTchicai and Kowald mutual openness to the sounds of other cultures and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efree improvisation made them quite compatible, so it’s something of a \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eshock that this is the only documentation of their work together. The \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etwo improvisors found themselves in Japan in 1983, when they recorded \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethe astonishing duet contained on the second side of this LP.
