According to Rick, \"I completely divorced my playing from any formal music knowledge, but it was very important to me to use original tuning. During those years, the sixties\/seventies, there was a lot of acoustic guitar playing, often using open tuning as a base. I wanted to create whole tones without de-tuning and keep access to the complex sounds stock tuning provided.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eRick pressed 500 copies of his tranquil solo guitar record, Gentle Wilderness, in 1978 on Niodrara Records, and sold many at performances and directly to music shops who would pay for them. As I worked further on it throughout the year, it became deeply associated with my memories of that place. Now, that house is up for sale, and I’ll probably never step foot in there again. In a few years it will look very different, maybe unrecognizable. This past year and a half, as everyone I knew left for college, I stayed behind working on these songs; but whenever I tried to write about these more-recent experiences, I found myself painting with broad, impressionist brush strokes. In nostalgic fits I revisited old lyrics concerning my most vivid memories, all of them taking place in the old house. I could already feel those moments slipping from present to past, forgoing their urgency. There was a haziness in my recollection that I hoped I could capture, assembling fragments of memories that recurred ceaselessly in my dreams, each time growing more distant and pure. I don’t remember how it felt back then anymore – not truthfully at least, but these songs are about how I’m going to think it felt.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe cover of Flashbulb Memory is a film photograph I shot in high school while on vacation with my family. From our balcony\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e we could see all the way down to the shoreline; the houses all stopped far before the sand, except for one lone house right up next to the waves. I don’t have any photographs of the old house before they moved and it went up for sale, but when I picture it in my head, it’s a similar image: The house is distant and obscured, surrounded by vast swaths of dark space. As I worked further on it throughout the year, it became deeply associated with my memories of that place. Now, that house is up for sale, and I’ll probably never step foot in there again. In a few years it will look very different, maybe unrecognizable. This past year and a half, as everyone I knew left for college, I stayed behind working on these songs; but whenever I tried to write about these more-recent experiences, I found myself painting with broad, impressionist brush strokes. In nostalgic fits I revisited old lyrics concerning my most vivid memories, all of them taking place in the old house. I could already feel those moments slipping from present to past, forgoing their urgency. There was a haziness in my recollection that I hoped I could capture, assembling fragments of memories that recurred ceaselessly in my dreams, each time growing more distant and pure. Her musicality and sense of self-belief developed as a young child in the church. Born Brittney Parks, but called Sudan from a young age, she moved around Cincinnati, Ohio many times as a child; religion and music were the most stable forces in her life. It was in church that Sudan began learning to play the violin by ear, participating in ensemble performances. \"I remember begging my mom to get me a violin,\" she says. \"From there I just never let it go – it felt like I had a purpose.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eGrowing up with a twin sister, Sudan also learned young that she was the \"bad twin\". After getting in touch with the band after the concert, we learned that ARSCH is an anarcho-syndicalist commune running a farm in a Swiss mountain village called Bitsch. They also told us that they maintain a recording studio straight out of the 70s in an old barn there.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eOver the years, this bunch of (non-)musicians produced loads of recordings which were kept on reel-to-reel tapes in this very barn. Unfortunately the barn burned down in 2019 because one of the band members fell asleep with a burning joint in his mouth. Luckily no one got hurt, though most of the vintage instruments and a big part of the sound archive did not survive the flames.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis tragedy motivated us at Empty Space to help ARSCH with the processing of those horrible events by collecting and publishing the last remaining sound pieces.
