Maxwell’s On Governors was a foundational work in feedback control theory from a mathematical and physical point of view, which layed the groundwork for more in-depth research into feedback and self-controlling or self-regulating systems. His paper did not focus on sound, but rather on the forms of feedback and control at play in steam engines, and more generally this paper helped work out the mathemtical foundation of the forms of regulation and control integral to mechanical forms of feedback. Governors are regulators in systems contructed around feedback.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eEven though the recordings on this tape are all sound-based, I became interested in these less sound-based foundations of feedback theory, since one of the first artificial feedback devices\/systems had nothing to do with sound – it was a float valve for maintaining water at a constant level invented in 270 BC in egypt. And other feedback-based systems surround us in our everyday lives (e.g. thermostats, etc). The pieces that came together for this release were recorded between 2023-2026 in vienna on various electronic, electro-acoustic, no-input, motorized, modular and\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e magnetic feedback systems. Only after slowly puttinng them together did I realize that it might function as a full release based around dfferent forms of feedback, or systems that self regulate in different ways and produce sound. The title came only at the end, when i was doing more research into feedback theory and realized i liked the idea of naming this collection after a form of regulation at the heart of feedback systems instead of the feedback systems themselves - perhaps because they often focus on very particular elements.
