Apologist is the project of Rose Actor-Engel, an artist and label curator who hails from Philadelphia. Dirt Road compiles a series of recordings made last summer using her Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 as a primary sound source.
Layers of analog oscillators and soft focus echo provide a wide-screen canvas against which Rose has discreetly placed recordings taken out of place and time – quiet moments caught during a personal hiking trip in Yosemite, a friend scratching nails against the window pane of a cheap motel room, personal renditions of drunken piano ballads and other remote views into a life trapped in a seemingly endless state of transition.
A sonic encapsulation of the self-described “extended mania” that has dominated the her the early days of her 30’s, these brief sonic vignettes render her incredible feelings of restlessness, sleeplessness and ravenousness as tactile spools of noise that radiate persistently out from their center. These are earnest meditations on longing and desire, filtered through the accumulated weight of memory and anticipation for the future."
