"ナッシュビルのシンガーソングライターNick Harleyが、地元ならではのフォークとカントリー・バラードを詰め込んだ、またしても傑作と呼ぶにふさわしいアルバムで帰ってきた。全8曲からなる『Painted Blue』は、2024年の『Leave No Trace』の続きを紡ぐ作品だ。70年代のクラシックなアメリカーナを彷彿とさせるローファイでほこりっぽい響きが、現代のオルタナティブ・カントリーというフィルターを通して表現されている。テネシー州の素晴らしいミュージシャンたちによるアンサンブルで奏でられる本作は、ニール・ヤングの『ディッチ・トリロジー』時代と初期のソン・ボルトの中間地点に位置する。オープニング曲「Talk About Love」は穏やかでストレートな曲調でありながら、タウンズ・ヴァン・ザントを思わせる美しいアレンジで聴き手を引き込む。一方、ゆったりとしたロックナンバー「The Other Side」は、時とともに失われてしまったノトーリアス・バード・ブラザーズ風の宇宙的な瞑想を彷彿とさせる。

"Nashville singer-songwriter Nick Harley returns with yet another winning collection of homegrown folk and country ballads. The eight-song Painted Blue picks up where 2024's Leave No Trace left off: lo-fi, dusty echoes of classic '70s Americana channeled through the lens of contemporary alt-country. This material, performed by a fantastic ensemble of Tennessee musicians, lands somewhere between Ditch Trilogy-era Neil Young and early Son Volt. Opener "Talk About Love" is gentle and straightforward enough, yet it reels the listener in with its beautiful, Townes Van Zandt-esque arrangement. Meanwhile, the laidback rocker "The Other Side" feels reminiscent of some Notorious Byrd Brothers-style cosmic meditation lost to time.

Sonic comparisons aside, Harley is ultimately a pretty distinctive figure in the South's current musical landscape. He is equally gifted in penning bittersweet lyrics and producing compelling full-band arrangements. Painted Blue, Harley's third album overall, is the Nashville artist's most fully-realized project to date. It's the perfect combination of Easy Moon's polished production and Leave No Trace's lo-fi minimalism.

Our two favorite cuts from this record land at the very end of its track listing: the sublime acoustic ballad "Mary Jane" and a fuzzed-out closer called "Spider Song." On the former, Harley and Co. sound like Steely Dan at their folkiest, showcasing an arrangement that pairs pop sensibility with harmonic brilliance. "Spider Song" is yet another example of Harley's unmatched songwriting ability; it's the very definition of a jammer with more hooks than a tackle box.

We said it before and we'll say it again: Harley has all the makings of a rising star, and ever since his full-length debut in 2023, he's been on a pretty incredible hot streak. There is not a dud to be found in this man's songbook. Absolutely do not sleep on this one."
